How do you display text in your games?

I don't use much text in my games. But when I do, I use actor that has drawn text in it. I draw a text on actor sprite, and then display that actor. And I usually copy paste letter i drawn with pixels. And been doing that for most of the time. But recently wanted to create my own font. Googled some font makers, creators etc and it's a nightmare. Literally there is no font maker software that would be easy to use. So I just gave up. I'll probably keep on copying and pasting letter I've drawn if I want to make an actor type. And in case i want to import font to Stencyl, I'll use my own.

How do you cope with that? Are you using your own fonts?

A lot of the fonts that come with Ubuntu have open licenses. As long as you don't try to sell the fonts as a stand-alone product, you can use them or modify them. I'll usually use the font itself, or write the alphabet in GIMP and modify the letters. That usually works well if I want a pixelated font--I can clean up stray pixels and change their positions to make some of the more elaborate letters (that don't scale down very well) more readable.

What do you do after you modify letters of a font? You save the file as font type?

For Stencyl I create my fonts in Designer and like merrak I save as png and import it. It's a bit of a hassle to create your first font as you've got go through each character you want, but if you're creating one the same size, but different colour etc. it quick as you can just duplicate a font and replace the image. Once you've made a font be sure to export it so you can keep it safe to reuse in other games.

I guess you still haven't used Scanahand to make your own font in less than 5 minutes.
