2. Game Salad Pro and their MarketPlace are rather expensive wich leads to community members being salesmen and there for the profit, whereas Stencyl is more of a helping, kind community. Besides, prices are a big deal!
What's wrong with profit?

If content, templates or books help you make money, why shouldn't the originator get a piece of the action? I think that's healthy for the community. Here's why... there's a ton of free information available for GameSalad, but people are still paying money for a copy of my textbook.
I'm not exclusive to GameSalad. I'm here to make money with Stencyl too.

I haven't given up on my Stencyl textbook project. (I'm waiting for 3.0.) And if I can complete it, that's great for the entire community. Even if you don't buy a copy, schools might be interested in it. (My GameSalad textbook has been used in classrooms.) Once you have that kind of community, it's great for sales and word-of-mouth marketing. Yet, without a textbook, it could be hard for a professor to justify a class on software development. It's part of building quality curriculum.
