@squeeb Up until recently, the game I'm working on was intended for PC only.  It's an SNES style platformer and now that the Switch can apparently run games made in Stencyl, I just had to check it out. I'm a big fan of the NES as well! Are you working on anything fun/cool?

I did end up hearing back from Nintendo and I realize now that though I'm a registered developer, you have to be approved to access development tools for the Switch. They request an overview of your project and development experience history.

Good luck! Would be very cool to see a game made in Stencyl on the eShop.

Hey there, I haven't been able to find anything about OpenFL on the middleware site of Nintendo's Developer Portal. Do you know if it's still up? Am I just looking in the wrong place?
Sent you a PM.

@Justin, will Stencyl start advertising this as part of Stencyl functionality?

Chit-Chat / Openfl (and Stencyl) now supports Nintendo Switch.

Hello everyone,

Great news! Openfl now supports Nintendo Switch backend.

1) Sounds great! I'm a Nintendo approved developer, where can I get access?

Go onto the Nintendo devleoper portal, go to the middleware site. There's a section for OpenFL. Devs plug their emails in there and Lars (Openfl dev) gets a 3rd-party confirmation from Nintendo that developer is approved. Lars gets the notice the same day and can give credentials as soon as he sees the notice.

2) I use Stencyl, and I'm a Nintendo approved developer, where can I get access?
The deal is, if any of our users can get approved as a Switch developer, we can then work with them to do anything needed to get that game running on the Switch.

3) For those who are not Nintendo approved developers, do they need to go through a Nintendo portal to get access?

The way we distribute the backend itself is just a private github repo, but we do need official confirmation from Nintendo that the developer is approved first. They are unbelievably strict about this, because they're Nintendo.

Anyone interested  can DM Lars Doucet on twitter @larsiusprime.
You can also contact Stencyl.

Via Lars (

Okay, we can finally announce this. Open_FL has an officially supported Nintendo Switch backend, which is what Defender's Quest is using. It uses current versions of OpenFL/Lime (no ancient forks!) and if you're approved by Nintendo you can use it for free.

This means that any library or framework that is based on OpenFL (such as @HaxeFlixel, which is what I'm using) works pretty much right out of the box.

It doesn't use any proprietary middleware, and it uses the same rendering logic & codebase that OpenFL uses on PC/mobile/etc.

So basically if Stencyl wanted to they could implement Switch support right now. The developers would need to be Nintendo Approved developers.

There is a long twitter thread, more info here:
And here:

@ Jon, What are Stencyl plans regarding this?

When is 3.5 being made public.
Wondering about this too. That last public beta was  Build 9300 - February 14th, 2017. That was over a year ago.
We are in July 2018. Any news on this?

wondering about this too.

Too bad, New York is only getting a Partial solar eclipse.
Its going to be maximum for us at 2:44:56 pm.

Hello again,

Another similar question just with tiles:

Stencyl checks to see if there is a actor underneath ( the actor must be from group 'UI')  before creating a tile in that position. If there is no actor underneath ( or the actor is not from the group " UI" ) then Stencyl doesn't create a tile.

How would this look in blocks?
