I was making a game using the adventure game kit, and put my own character in, copying every behavior related to movement that the Golden Prince had. But my character won't animate, instead they just move up, down, left, and right while always facing down. I thought I had to change the names of the frames to match but that didn't help. It's probably something obvious, but I can't figure it out.

It's on Forge, called sp. (It didn't show up for me after I uploaded it, but I think it's there)
Look for the attached picture.

Game Ideas / Single character stealth RPG
« on: May 10, 2011, 05:14:40 am »
INTRO
This is an RPG partially inspired by Metal Gear Solid. It's a "one-man sneaking mission" and you start with no weapons, and you have to infiltrate a base full of soldiers, and it's often better to avoid combat. The similarities pretty much end there though. I wanted to make an RPG similar to the first Dragon Warrior. A short and simple one-person RPG. Several ideas went threw my head, some involving dinosaurs, but in the end I got some inspiration from a different one person game. I don't know how I'm going to combine traditional JRPG gameplay with some stealth action gameplay, but I'll figure something out.

CHARACTERS
Main character

A fairly young soldier currently off-duty, but called back into action for a special mission. He's raising his two children, but they don't get along well. Thinks he's cool and good at sarcasm, but often tells punchlines wrong and makes himself look like a fool (one of the reasons his kids don't like him much)

SETTING
The world this game takes place in has a mix of modern, medieval fantasy, and futuristic sci-fi. This game will be light in the fantasy and sci-fi parts, but you will fight monsters and you will fight robots! Expect some equipment based on those too. The game will take place in a supposedly abandoned desert facility. It's been occupied by a mysterious organization for a currently unknown reason.

STORY
You play as a currently unnamed off-duty soldier called into this mission because he is considered the best man for the job. He's currently raising his two kids, but is "persuaded" to accept the mission. After a briefing, you head to the desert facility, and from there you are on your own! For some reason, you come unarmed (I'll think of a reason!)

GAMEPLAY
Simple turn-based one person RPG battles. However, at first it's dangerous to fight most of the enemies. It's better to avoid them until you find some weapons! And avoid them you can! The battles will be initiated by enemies patrolling the rooms, and there will be various little nooks and crannies to hide in. Once you get weapons though, it's not smooth-sailing, you need to watch your ammo! There will be a pretty low level cap, so no extreme power-leveling for you!

WELL...
All I've got so far is several ideas on paper, and sprites for the main character. I've made a template or two that I'll be using, which will speed up making other sprites dramatically. I need the RPG kit to be further developed to do much, but I'm going to be making graphics until then! Which is of course a lot of work...no hurry.

Game Ideas / Anyone know of any good spriting palette sites?
« on: April 28, 2011, 02:25:51 am »
Someone on an older Stencyl site (either the previous Beta forums or the OLD site) made a topic with a list of sites with some nice palettes particularly for pixel art. As usual, I didn't write down or bookmark a single one. Anyone know of any good ones? I'm terrible at picking colors myself.

Windows / Mac / Flash / HTML5 / Batface the Jumper
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:41:26 am »
So, I finally decided to try and make some short, simple, little game.
I made all the graphics in less than an hour, and putting the level together also took less than an hour, including several tests. It's not done...but it's playable...I think.

http://www.stencyl.com/v10/game/play/2069

When I try playing it on here, it's super duper slow. It's normal speed when I play it from StencylWorks. If it seems super slow, please let me know. The controls are simple. Left arrow makes you move left, right arrow makes you move right, and Z makes you jump. The goal is to go up! You "finish" by touching the Moon. But I don't know how to make a results screen yet, so nothing actually happens. Just consider it done once you touch it. Also, try to stay on the screen...I tried the Cannot Exit Screen behavior, but all it did was make Batface appear near the top of the stage, stuck in place. Weird. Since the Always Simulate behavior is there however, there's a chance you can get back on screen...if you react fast enough, and are high enough. If you think the collision is weird, note that Batface's collision box is 32 x 32.

So...all I need is to find a way to stop Batface from being able to go off screen; make a results screen (tells you your time, and gives you a title based on how fast you were); and a title screen, probably with the game's complicated controls. Oh, and a song, there might be something fitting on the Forge though. And...perhaps I could use a different jump sound effect?

Resolved Questions / Sword Attack bug in Action Adventure - Lite Kit
« on: April 04, 2011, 01:38:35 am »
I was trying to test game with the Action Adventure - Lite Kit, but I got an error related to the Sword Attack behavior. Looks like something is missing in an "if" block, but I have no idea what goes there.

(is this the right section to post this?)
