Suggestion Archives / Separate Icons for Each Platform
« on: May 11, 2014, 08:26:23 am »
I thought of this idea when I released an app for Android yesterday. Unlike iOS, an Android icon can be any shape you want it to be, not just a square that iOS crops to the correct shape. In order for me to get a different looking icon on Android and iOS, I would need to keep reimporting it.

I think it would be smart to have the default icon that you import (the 1024x1024 one that applies to all platforms) and there should also be slots for each platform (you have to option to put an icon here or not). If not icon is specified, the default icon is used, but if one is, it overrides the default icon.

Extension Ideas / Label bug when using different scales
« on: March 06, 2014, 07:33:08 pm »
This has been haunting me ever since I first started using labels. I was told that you should attach a label to a very small actor, so I did (a 1x1 transparent pixel). I spawn these, position them, and set the text, and everything seems fine in 1x mode. As soon as I export or begin testing in any mode higher than 1x, the label gets offset ever so slightly. So I finally ran more tests with this today and came to an interesting conclusion, the labels shift when the scale changes.

On 1x, they are perfect.
On 2x, they go up the height of the actor they are attached to.
On 4x, they go up twice the height of the actor.

I made an attempt to fix it but I am at a loss of how the label class operates so I ended up giving up. Screenshots of the bug are attached.

Abandoned Bugs / Make the Log Viewer Print Memory Usage Less Often
« on: October 23, 2013, 07:42:07 pm »
I have run into this problem ever since the log viewer was first implemented. I have it open so I can monitor my game and Stencyl keeps logging its memory usage. It ends up messing me up when I have to copy something because it will pop another one up before I copy the lines I need. Is there a way you can switch it from being about every 1 second to maybe 5 or 10?

Extensions / iOS Video Player
« on: September 03, 2013, 05:40:28 pm »
As soon as Jon posted about being able to include arbitrary files into our games, I instantly thought of how cool a videos extension would be. I started coding it, ran into an absurd amount of problems and eventually came up with a working video player.

The extension allows you to stream videos from a website or play them locally from the device in one block.

Streaming Videos:
-Simply put the URL of the video you want to stream in the play video block
-Make sure you put the http://

Local Videos:
-Add the videos you want to the app ( How to include arbitrary data in projects)
-I recommend using mp4 videos but others may work too. Feel free to try others and post if they work
-Try not to use extremely large files. The extension must first copy the video to the tmp directory before it plays so you don't want it to take long to start

NOTE: Currently, only lowercase names without numbers are supported for local files. I am actively looking into how to remove this restriction.
Code: [Select]
Changelog:
1.1.1
-Updated help website
1.1
-Adds the option to play the video with or without controls
-Removed some debug statements
1.0
-Initial release
I hope everyone enjoys this extension!

(Update: Download the 64-bit compatible version)

The link on this page is also now 64-bit compatible (courtesy of MaxGlocking).

I don't know what happened, but when I downloaded the most recent Stencyl, one of my previously working games decided to break. I ran the game on my iPad 2 and it decided to try and load 1.5x graphics. Since those aren't included in iOS, the game crashed. Here is the start of the log and some lines right before the crash which I considered to be interesting.

Code: [Select]

Fixed Bugs (3.x) / XY values always returning -1
« on: July 24, 2013, 05:57:33 pm »
I must be going mentally insane! I can't get any of my actors to return any other X or Y value besides -1. Whether I drag the actor directly on the screen in the scene editor or if I make an actor and then set it's position in Design Mode, it only returns -1. The actors are set to simple physics and all worked fine in the last Stencyl update. I downloaded the newest version and everything when all haywire.

Here is my latest creation in Stencyl 3.0. It is a puzzle game which I call Light Em Up.

App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/light-em-up/id650039872?ls=1&mt=8

Flash Demo: http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/20123

A world of puzzles that puts all other puzzles to shame!

You are the fire and you must burn all of the wood scattered around the level. The difficulty of the game comes from the way you move the fire. Every time you move in a certain direction, all of the fire will move in that direction. All of the fire must be burning wood to complete the level. You must also be wary of the water in each level. The fire will be extinguished if it touches it. Good Luck!

This game will be available on Google Play the IAP bugs are fixed for Android.

iPhone / iPad / Android / Paratrooper Defence (iOS)
« on: June 02, 2013, 09:35:23 am »
Here is my latest creation made with Stencyl 3.0. It is a replica of the Parachute game from the old iPods. I couldn't find a good remake of the game on the App Store so I decided to make it myself.

App Store Link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/paratrooper-defence/id647707123?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D2

Google Play: Will come when IAPs work on Android.

The game is free with an in-app purchase to buy the full version. The full version removes a 25 point score limit and adds a Classic mode. The Classic mode looks like the original that was on the old iPods (monochrome display).

I will be uploading a flash version to the Stencyl website so everyone can try it online as well.

If you download and play it, I would love to hear you comments on it.

iPhone / iPad / Android / Emoti-Hop (iOS App Store) (Free)
« on: April 14, 2013, 07:31:14 pm »
Here is a game that I started developing when I first started using Stencyl, then remade with Stencyl 3.0 to make it significantly better. Thanks again to the Stencyl developers of this great tool!

Link to App Store

You play as Emoti, a rolling emoticon. Your goal is to jump through as many walls as possible in the given amount of time. You control how fast Emoti rolls by tilting your device. The more you tilt, the steeper you make the hill. As you are controlling Emoti's speed, you must also tap the screen to make him jump through the openings in the walls. If you hit a wall, it is game over.

We have also given you the ability to customize your own Emoti and use it during the game. There are 9 different emotions and 11 different colors as of this version. We will add more as we release updates.

There are three different time modes you can play on (30 Second Sprint, Minute Mode, and 5 Minute Mayhem). All are hooked to their own Game Center scoreboard.

The game is free to play with an in-app purchase to unlock more features.

iPhone / iPad / Android / Calculus of Felicity (Philosophy App)
« on: March 08, 2013, 05:29:31 pm »
Here is an app I created a while ago and neglected to release. It is the Calculus of Felicity in an app!

The Calculus of Felicity is a philosophical concept thought up by Jeremy Bentham. It is supposed to be able to determine how much happiness an act will bring you. You can then compare that with other acts to see which one would be the best to do. The app allows you to easily fill in all of the variables and calculate the amount of happiness. It will also sort the acts by their amount of happiness to help you determine the best one.

This is not a game, but rather a fun little utility made with Stencyl 3. I guess it can just how another thing Stencyl can be used for.

This has now been accepted on the App Store and it is free!

Fixed Bugs (3.x) / Error Highlighting Broken Again
« on: February 08, 2013, 04:56:15 pm »
I hate to say this, but error highlighting is failing me again. I don't know what build I am on but I know this was working before (after the first fix). Hope it can fixed at some point soon.

Chit-Chat / Stencyl 3.0 Beta Changelog
« on: January 29, 2013, 11:59:28 am »
OK, I have seen enough people in the 3.0 discussion forums asking for some information of what is being done in the beta. To end all of these questions, I will make an attempt to sync the 3.0 Beta changelog with this post. I hope this shows that work is continuing to be done on 3.0.

Click Here to View the Changelog

I have updated the link to take the changelog off my site (had some issues). It is now hosted off of Google Drive.

Extension Ideas / [EXTENSION] Tiles not reseting on scene switch [LATER]
« on: January 24, 2013, 01:56:38 pm »
I noticed this today and I'm not sure if it a bug or if it is intended. If you make some tiles via the TileAPI in a scene, switch the scene away then back to the original scene (or reload the scene, it works the same), the tiles you put down are still there. Shouldn't all the tiles reset back to what they were when the scene was designed in Stencyl?

I have attached a sample game which demonstrates this bug.
