Hey, Innes. We thought this was a good idea too.

See if this does what you're looking for. We just threw it together based on your strategies:,34106.0.html

The Organizer Extension

Ever had trouble organizing your Stencyl projects and wished that there was an easier way to see which scenes had which behaviors and which actors? Well, look no further than the Organizer for Stencyl!

Each time you save your game, Organizer automatically updates with any new scenes and any new actors or behaviors attached to any scene, allowing you to easily keep track of what you have done with your project.

Any time you open a game, Organizer will prompt you if you would like to use it with said game. If you hit no, you can always open Organizer later through the Extensions menu at the top of the tool bar.

Open Stencyl, Click on Debug, Click on View Workspace, Open stencylworks, open extensions, and drag OrganizerExtension.jar into that folder. Close and Reopen Stencyl and you're all set!

Unfortunately, not quite.  We're getting there.  We're also trying to work on some bugs from the last release.  Very soon.

Vallar, thanks for the report

Run -> Clean Project.

NOTICE:  If anyone downloaded the new version between this post and the previous post (within 10 minutes or so) please redownload.  There was an incorrect file that is definitely doing to cause some issues.  All is fixed now.

Okay.  Before I answer the dialog questions or try to get to the bottom of your error, MetalLord, here's a new update we've put together already.

V0.3.4 is out and you can find information on the updates at our wiki:

Tetra also noted that he spent quite a bit of time trying to replicate the dialog issues you've been having to no avail.  It seems to work perfectly fine on his end.  No offense, but we suspect user error.  All the more reason I'm working diligently on getting a tutorial put together.  I'm trying to increase our production quality (especially since I'm a bit of an audio engineer), so it'll be a couple weeks.

For now, scan the wiki relentlessly.  : )

Thanks for everyone's patience.  And thanks for all the Twitter posts and follows.  We're so excited to see so many people at least testing out the database, if not using it somehow to develop with.

Hey guys!

@Mutantfish:  Versatility it is!  Yes, we love the idea of the action battle system features.  We're both huge fans of games like Legend of Zelda and we both play a lot of MMO's, so expect to see many feature options from games like those.  As far as more intricate or game-specific details that will be up to users to code in with Stencyl.  The best part of the database is that it's usable with any systems or games you can code in Stencyl.  The options are limitless.

@aesadai:  As much as we'd love to make money to help pay for our time and webhosting costs, I don't know of any options to sell a download link.  We use Pay with a Tweet in order to spread the word and get our extension into more developer's hands.  Did you try the Adfly download?  If you use an addon like AdblockPlus it actually blocks the ad and you just have to wait for a few seconds.

If all else fails, aesadai, send me a private message with your email on here and I'll send you a copy through that.  Whatever we have to do to make sure you can use the extension.  And thanks for your support!

@Mineat:  Thanks for sharing, but maybe starting a new topic for your battle system would be a better idea.  You're welcome to post a link to your topic for ERC users to check out.  But since it's not specific to ERC, a new topic would be preferable.

@Mutantfish again:  Your friendly neighborhood coder, Tetra, just updated the ERC to hopefully* fix your issue.

*There's definitely an issue with the aspect ratio here.  We changed the window to be scaleable, hopefully fixing the issue, but we can't guarantee it, since it seems to work just fine on our monitors.

@Olesia:  Yessiree!  Tetra's already been bugging me about it so expect a tutorial or two shortly.

@Everyone else:  I'd like to apologize for my absence lately.  We've been working diligently on the ERC, but I just recently started a band, began recording a demo and on top of that discovered that my wonderful girlfriend, Janna is pregnant.  So I'm going to be a dad!

I'm trying my best to keep motivated here and Tetra's been cheering me on as well.  We've updated the database to v0.2.6 and I'm not supposed to tell you, but one of the battle systems is pretty close to being ready.  We're nearly done with the database.

Once we are finished, we plan on adding extra content in optional updates.  These will include things like a crafting database, new battle system features and much much more.  We can't wait to finish up and make the system simpler to use so more people can start creating their own RPGs.

Thanks for your support!

Excellent question!

I have absolutely no problem with users releasing their projects commercially using my art.  In fact, I'd be thrilled!

I'm going to license them under a creative commons of some sort.  I know there are a few options, and I've never really looked into them.  I guess that's what I'll be doing this weekend.

For now, just know that you're very much welcome to use any art within the ERC kit commercially or otherwise, so long as it isn't being redistributed or sold without our written permission.  Even the windows and GUIs are all custom made, so they're all available to be used in any project.

Also:  When I released that art I was planning on releasing more color swatches and tiles later on.  If there's anything you'd like to see, just let me know and I'd be happy to release another set.

If you're using the ERC and run across bugs or other issues, please post them here.  We'll try to keep an updated list here of known issues and our progress in fixing them.

Thanks for all your help and support!

Current version: 0.2.4
Known Issues:  Found here at the Wiki
Major Missing Features:  Combat and Status Effect Changes

Hey, Oz.

We never really considered anything like that, but it sounds awesome and since we're both pretty big fans of Earthbound, I don't see why we shouldn't include that option!

Also, on another note.  Yes, it's nearly a week late, but the ERC has been updated.  It's still the same download link.  Feel free to enjoy the new version and let us know what you think!

Our website is back!  It's alive.... and covered in ugly ads....  Websites cost a bit of money to keep hosted, ad-free with a legitimate domain name.  Due to this, we're using a placeholder domain name and we're going to allow our host to place their ads on the site.  We're terribly sorry for any inconvenience this might cause, but we're kind of out of options for now.

The new website domain is:

Now that the ERC is in a state where (other than combat), games could start being developed using it, we'd like to start a new topic in the subforum where you can post your creations in which the ERC is part of the game.  Even if it's just a small part.  Post and let us know if you're working on a game you'd like to share and we'll start the new topic for the games.  Can't wait to see what you're doing with the database!

We currently do not have a working battle system.  Before we can implement our battle systems (yes, there will be more than one), we need to first implement status conditions and skills.  Before discussing how our battle systems will work, first we'll mention the two battle systems we plan on implementing.  The first one is a TBS and the second one is an ABS.

TBS (Turn-Based System) - This is a battle system that is utilized by many classic JRPGS (Japanese Role-Playing Games), such as the early Final Fantasy games (Final Fantasy I, II, III...), in which players and enemies take turns when attacking.

ABS (Action-Based System) - This is a battle system that works in real-time, i.e. The Legend of Zelda, where the player moves about the screen and presses a button to swing (or use) a weapon at a given rate.

Already the ERC contains the code to access and assign stats to characters, such as Health, Magic, Attack, Defense, Magic Attack, Magic Defense, Agility, and Luck.  When we get around to including an enemy tab on our Database, we will allow enemies to have the same stat parameters.  When a player (or enemy) attacks, it will calculate the damage based on a formula and then it will use a custom block to set the player's Current HP to their Current HP minus the Damage.

For enemies that track the player, this will be used specifically in the ABS.  Each enemy with the appropriately attached behavior will run a loop that checks for the player's position (basically, absolute value of Monster X, Y - Player X, Y).  If that position is less than a certain value, then we use simple trigonometry to point the monster in the appropriate direction (using the atan block with a conversion to degrees and the velocity code block to set direction of motion and speed).  By using the same degrees calculated in the trigonometry code, we can also set the animation for the enemy so that it is facing the correct direction.  Then, with continued distance checks, we can determine at what distance the enemy should attack the player and at what rate the attacks will continue, much like you would when creating an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game.

As you can see, it can be pretty complex, even just to explain.  If you need a more thorough "how-to" on making an ABS system (again, like in The Legend of Zelda), you'd probably be best off asking in the "Ask A Question" section of this forum.  Even then, you may not get an answer because it does take a lot of work to actually make and can't be explained quickly.

For an example of a more complex ABS, in an RTS (for example), search for our game "Shelter" on Newgrounds, just as an example.

Yes sir.  After talking to the brains of the operation I'm led to believe that everything that was promised has been completed and will be available for download soon. The only big chunk of features we're missing is a battle system and skills. Expect an update this weekend so long as no monster bugs come our way.

I can find a better solution for the download. Let me know if you're still having issues.
