Ask a Question / RTS Unit Movement

Hey Guys put together a quick Select units and move to click location for a RTS im making, problem i'm having is working out a way to have them bunch up in rows or beside each other instead of just bunching up on one spot.. i tried collision but they just push each other or it just looks funny, also tried stop movement on collision but then they end up getting stuck to each other and wont move anymore.. any ideas? i can post a example of what ive done if needed

Is there a bug with importing? its just not working for me.. I can't drag the png into stencyl or import it within stencyl.. it just doesn't do anything.. :/

Frustrating the hell outta me. cant get my head around this but its right there infront of me..

I'm making a world domination/risk clone sort of game.. all im trying to do atm is make it so..

ive only got 3 territories atm for getting the basics sorted but anyway, when one is pressed on i want to switch its animation to 'highlighted' and have it selected. if i press on another to deselect it and switch animation back to normal.

so.. problem is how am i going to have it detect that another territory has been selected? i'm assuming once 'selected' switch animation of every single other territory to normal and deselect them but then if i was to have like 20 territories that would be a pain and seems not needed.. surely theres a simpler way? o.O

No idea the name just yet this is all just ideas but you get the base from the subject name..

Several weeks now i've planned and written down a game thats from a few other games put together. Im sure it sounds 100x better to me since i've got it all planned in my head and its impossible to show you the potential that i see but ill give it a shot..

I've always been attracted to pixel iso graphics, especially detailed cities they look amazing! heres an attached example..

the possibilities are endless you could design whatever you like and throw it in there.. anyway back to the game idea..

A game i had recently become obsessed with is 'Rebuild' its a zombie survival game where you start off with 4 blocks of a city fenced in meanwhile the rest of the city is completely overrun with zombies and the helpless people stranded/left to die.. you scavenge for food, weapons, anything needed to survive and expand by capturing nearby houses/buildings.. level/equip your survivors and last as long as you can... i want to implement this idea with of course completely different combat/gameplay and maybe not even have it based on zombies but perhaps mutated beings or whatever.. but in PIXELS

I've barely started gameplay wise but have been at it designing buildings and 'graphics' for it for the past 3 weeks and am calling on you fellow stencylers for ideas and feedback on what you think of this game idea..

Also would be awesome if i could get a few people interested in pixels to perhaps help design and create buildings and maybe some sprites? i haven't even scratched the surface of what i want to feature and implement but im sure its best to stop dribbling on about just ideas until they are completed so if you're interested please post here or message me...

hey guys, problem im having is kinda hard to explain..

heres a example of what's wrong ...

to select a target you hold shift + mouse click on target and it sets 2 game attributes
Select X, & and Select Y to x, y center of self and creates a selected box at x, y center..
the selected box has its own behavior to always stay at select x, y and kill self on deselect yadayada..

Its worked! awesome.. so i add in an extra enemy..

now the problem seems to be no matter what enemy i click on it always creates it at the same enemy..?

for one yes i know i ask a lot of questions on here! but you guys are just full of wisdom ;)

trying to get my head around the inventory and equipment system within my game..

atm what i have is a whole bunch of game attributes that are booleans for.. if holding item, if item in this slot, that slot yadda yadda and its becoming a mess, i don't think this would be what most people would do but its all i could think of at the time...

Firstly this is just with moving items within the playing screen..

With moving ingame items its tile based, if mouse is down on a item, creates a actor (different mouse) and then once released the item moves to that spot snaps to the grid and the old mouse comes back and kills the created.. that works perfectly.. but now trying to implement so that can only do it within a 3x3 area around the player as well as if a wall is between the placement and the player it wont move... i just cant get my head around it!! anyone else have a simpler way of doing this?

Hey guys!

I'm new to stencyl, roughly 2 months into it and loving it!
Very new to coding and making games altogether but I've had my fair share of playing games lol..

Anyway i'd like to just share my progress so far and share it with everyone to get some feedback and ideas...

As you can see i've done f all except the very basics..

Features next to nothing atm cept the bare basics of gameplay..
All you can do atm is move around a empty map..  Select a target and switch from range to melee with keys 1 & 2..

Another reason i've posted it on here is.. as i am still new; it would be great if people could answer questions as i progress through things, i'm sure to need some help along the way!

Next thing i'm working on is the inventory and equipment slots..

The Idea atm is when a enemy dies it spawns a dead body.. you can open the body and loot them by clicking the item and then clicking your inventory slots.. But i have no idea how to accomplish that.. With armor/weapons etc etc ill have regions in the equipment slots and once a item is inside it locks in and for example..

If Bronze Sword in weapon slot
Set Player Damage to Damage + Bronze Sword atk stat

or something like that...
Anyway thanks for your feedback!

PS the graphics r from another game called Tibia, which is basicly what im trying to recreate in my own way... they are just there for placement atm i'll eventually be obtaining my own.. just nailing the basic gameplay first.

Resolved Questions / Corrupt Game, SOLVED

For some F*&% reason.. whenever i make a game and get something actually worth calling a game.. i always end up getting a corrupted game.. id save often etc then one day coming back on i open stencyl and the front screen with all the games is glitchy if i move it up and down game logos wont show and i cant scroll down the games just disappear.. once i end up finding my game it either comes up a corrupted scene file stencyl will reload to a previous save and id lose several hours of work... or the game just shits itself and i cant open it at all.. if i delete the game it stops glitching and the games show again...?

Everytime i make a game now i save it as.. 2-3 different games at a time.. as i close the game and come back to it again.. one will be corrupted but the others r fine.. wtf is going on its really Fing frustrating!!!!

Ok so i have my Enemy set up..

when created set health to 100 yadda yadda

When flame collides with Enemies Group
Decrease Health by Player Damage which is 10..
if Health < 0 Kill self

Flame Collides once, enemy dies...

Seems that having 'when created' does not set health at all.. But then if i use a always block it sets to 100 and won't change... am i missing something here? -_-'

Hey guys quick question..

I'm creating a inventory and equipment system atm, the way im trying to do it is so that if a item is on screen, once pressed you 'hold the item details' and then if mouse is pressed inside any slot it sets the slot as used, kills the item and creates another inside the slot.. just having trouble working out how to keep the information of what item i pressed and placing it into the slot.. i figured id use lists and have the slot get item number in list and create actor but not sure...

any advice?

for some reason whenever i try to use anything that involves if mouse is clicked or pressed on actor set actors x, y to mouse yadda yadda..

the actor just disappears.. is this because of the camera focusing on player or...? :/

Ok so what i'm trying to accomplish is.. you alt + mouse click a target and it 'selects it' ..

the idea i had at first was when enemy is clicked create a actor 'box' under the target that stays relative to enemies position, if clicked on again kills the 'box' actor and deselects the enemy. the dilemma i'm having is how would i do this?

one thing i thought was always have a box under enemies but hidden if enemy clicked on show/hide it.. but the problem would be how do i attach the 'box' to the enemy when both are created? i tried with a small collision box on both actors that only collides with one another and have it so box stay relative to 'last collided actor' but it doesn't work...  any other ideas?

Also the next step after that is..

the movement is 32x32 tile based and i want the melee attacks to work like this..

If you select enemy on screen.. they stay the target until unclicked.. if selected target moves in any of the 8 squares around the character.. The character attacks the target. basicly like enemy takes damage after every 3 seconds or so..

with ranged attack id like to be able to have if selected target in range of 4 squares around player take damage after every 3 seconds and repeats.. id have a created actor/spell/bullet etc etc at player and move towards enemy and kill self once it collides with it

obviously i know the basics and understand how i would write these out but unfortunately lack the experience to just create this from scratch without a massive hassle and would take me forever to do little work.. so i'm asking if anyone is kind enough to share their wisdom and help with ideas of how to bring these behavior ideas to life.. thanks for your patience reading this long post!

Ok so idk what the hell ive pressed or whats happened but when i used to edit behaviors i could just edit the behavior and then test game and it would be good to go applying the changes i've made.. NOW for some odd stupid reason changing attribute numbers within a behavior do nothing.. it stays the new number but playing the game the scenes still stuck on the old number.. the only way to change things is within the scene on the 'inspector' sure its not life changing and is fine the way it is but its frustrating me why this has changed.... did i hit a hotkey or something..?

Hey guys i have a tile movement behavior all set up but i want to modify it so that instead of moving by 1 tile at a time, you can hold down the key and it will continue to move in that direction but once the key is released the actor continues to move until it reaches the next tile..

I know how to set up somewhat most of it but i'm having trouble figuring out how to make it detect when it reaches the next tile and stop..

anyone kind enough to write a quick behavior that does that or able to give me a simple example i can follow? thanks guys

Hey guys been working on a game for several weeks now... this is just one part i've been working on that i'd like to share and get some advice tips or whatever else... all the graphics i've made myself so its taken a while even tho i dont have much to show for it..

Trying to implement the illusion of isometric gameplay... Problem i'm facing right now is how to have some sort of 'region' inside the building so that when player enters building the building 'actor' i have for inside shows and rest of it hides..

Also collision.. i haven't gotten close to trying yet and have no idea how to approach it... any advice
or feedback would be great as i'm still new to stencyl... thanks guys!

Edit: what i'm trying to show is when you walk around the building the walls change but i'm trying to figure out a region for the inside
