Ask a Question / HTML5 problem...
« on: October 12, 2018, 04:44:53 pm »
So I've been having a problem with running my game on html5 (I am not a subscriber, so I only have the html5 beta on 3.4). After only a couple of scenes into the game,  I get a blank black screen. When I run logs I get this sort of thing (many lines of it):

Level:     ERROR
When:      2018-10-12 19:36:12:068
From:      stencyl.sw.editors.snippet.designer.codebuilder.xml.XMLParser

Level:     ERROR

From:      stencyl.sw.editors.snippet.designer.codebuilder.xml.XMLParser

Can't load definition: get-val-78-2

Level:     ERROR
When:      2018-10-12 19:36:12:059
From:      stencyl.sw.editors.snippet.designer.codebuilder.xml.XMLParser

Can't load definition: get-game-val-85

Level:     WARN

From:      stencyl.sw.util.Util

Could not parse "". Defaulting to: 0.0. stencyl.core.engine.snippet.IVariable.getRealValue (line: 251)

I am not sure if these errors are causing the problem since the game is not actually crashing or anything, but they are the only problem I can find. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Ask a Question / Cannot test game, throws error on Flash and MacOS
« on: October 11, 2018, 08:37:24 pm »
I recently upgraded to the latest MacOS and now I cannot test my games on Flash or on Mac. I saw the thread about the "corrupted newgrounds.swf" error, which is what I get when I try to run on Flash... but why can't I build the Mac app either?

It seems my game can be run on HTML5, but for some reason it has always been really buggy on that format, like some crucial scenes in my game (which work perfectly on other formats) are just blank screens... I always figured this was a function of the HTML5 material being in beta and (I hoped) it would be fixed for the official release.

So I guess I have two questions: 1) why is my game not building? (see log attached, just for Mac since I think the flash error is the one discussed in the other post) and 2) Are there any specific things I am supposed to be doing differently to make my game work on HTML5? Any help is much appreciated!

Journals / Samurai Action Platformer – Playtesting needed!
« on: December 24, 2017, 10:43:47 am »
Hello All!

This game used to be top-down RPG, but we have recently revived it as an action platformer / metroidvania type game. We are currently working on the controls for the player character, trying to get him to feel right. Please playtest this short demo (only a couple minutes, tops) and let us know what you think! The controls are:
Left and Right Arrow Keys = run left and right
[Z]/Up Arrow = Jump, Air Jump, Wall Jump
Down Arrow = Duck and Slide
[X] = attack (combos up to 3 times)
Press and Hold [X] to charge up a power attack

All the assets are stand-ins except for the main character, who has more polished artwork, so you can get a sense for the intended style of the rest of the animations and assets. Detailed feedback welcome!

*****UPDATE – New Version!*****

***UPDATE 13 MAY 2017***

Hey, just wanted to post a quick update at the top of the thread, since the game has come so far since I first posted. The main news is that I have officially published a Beta version of the game on the Stencyl Arcade. Check it out!

**********

Hello Stencylers!

I have been playing around with this idea now for a while, and recently it coalesced into something. I always loved Zelda games, and I have also become interested recently in procedural generation... And obviously the world needs a proc gen Zelda clone. (Actually, I bet there are already a dozen of them, but what can you do?)

The story of the game is that the dungeon is a kind of dreamworld: the player wakes up (or doesn't wake up...?) into an eerie and endless labyrinth, full of impossible creatures and otherworldly beings. She has to journey down into the dark to uncover the dark secrets of this strange world... and maybe then she can escape.

My big goals for this game are as follows:
- Make the gameplay loop as streamlined as possible, so there is no sifting through menus or learning a bunch of complicated skills.
- Within that simple framework create a lot of potential variety.
- Make a framework that I can add interesting content to later; the big idea for this game is that the dungeon will eventually be stocked with bits of interesting lore: story fragments, poems, cryptic writings, unusual objects – let's call them Lorebites; then, once I have the engine in place, I can just add Lorebites to the game as I create them.

I also plan to add things like different character classes (I am hoping I can differentiate them with basic stats alone), lots of monsters, boss monsters with unique powers, traps, treasure, different tilesets to the keep the dungeon fresh.

For now, I know it is incomplete and the dungeon is pretty barren, but I would love some feedback on the gameplay. Is it fun? Is it easy to pick up? Are there any major problems? Let me know! Thanks!

Windows / Mac / Flash / HTML5 / 10000 Dragons: Action RPG
« on: September 15, 2016, 02:31:53 pm »
Hello Stencylers!

My brother and I have been working on this game for several months now, and we finally have a playable demo to distribute. We have been posting off and on in the Journals forum about it, and I posted a link there as well, but I wanted to write about it here too now that we have something actually playable.

The game is a top-down RPG adventure with a samurai theme. All the graphics, story, and music are original. We are hoping people will play our demo and give us some feedback. Our goal is to expand the game to something much larger, but we want to hear from some players first.

The demo is on itch.io -- you can find it here:

https://itch.io/embed/72050?linkback=true

The itch page also has some background lore if you are interested.

The main version of the demo is a Mac-only app, but I put up a trimmed down version as an .swf file as well (though it has a somewhat less-than-perfect framerate and some missing content--I had to trim it a lot to get it to run okay on flash  ::)). Anyway, if you want to play all the way through the final scene in the demo, you'll need to download the full version.

Here is the trailer:

Let us know what you think! Cheers.

Journals / 10000 Dragons: Action RPG
« on: June 16, 2016, 09:19:22 pm »
My brother and I have been working on this game for several months now. It is a top-down action RPG, inspired by things like Zelda, Diablo, and Final Fantasy, among other things. We are hoping to get a workflow going where we can release the game in relatively short episodes, with each episode containing new areas, quests, characters, and so on. As you can see from the screen capture below, several of the assets, including the main character, are still stand-ins, but the environment is pretty much done (for Chapter 1, at least, and it is all in very early development, so it could still change).

Since my brother is handling basically all of the artwork, he will be posting most of the concept art, character sprites, etc. My end is game logic, dialogue, and music. Here are the working features the game has so far:

-8 way movement and attacking for the main character
-Enemy AI for charging at the player when he comes within a specifiable distance
-Enemy attack behaviors for both ranged and melee
-Functioning HUD with health bar and mana bar
-Treasure drop system so that enemies can drop randomized gold or other items (player inventory still in the works)
-System for multiple save files
-Hand-painted Sumi-e style backgrounds and environments
-Characters designed using 3D models for smooth animations and crisp camera angles
-Particle effects for weather, fire, blood splatters, etc.
-Original music

UPDATED: September 2016

We finally published a demo! It is on itch.io -- you can find it here:

It is currently a mac-only app. Sorry! But we are working on getting it going on other platforms.

Bug Archives / Extensions not working at all
« on: May 02, 2016, 02:34:42 pm »
I am trying to get the Dialog Extension to work, as dialog trees are pretty essential to my game. Unfortunately, I seem to be unable to use any extensions at all. I have installed them correctly, as far as I can tell: for the dialog extension, the .jar files are in the engine-extensions folder along with the "Dialog" folder that has all the code. I can go to the Extensions Manager under Game Settings and activate the extensions, but even after I close and restart the game, no extensions appear at all on the left-hand side of my game Dashboard. The "Extensions" heading is there, but it is empty and there is no dropdown.

Also, I imported the sample game for the dialog extension, and when I try to test it, I get an error message. The logs for that error are attached. I do not think the problem is with the Dialog Extension itself because no extensions, not even the build-ins, are working--they all have the same problem where I activate them, but then don't get access to them in the game.

I am using 3.4 (Beta 2) of Stencyl on a Mac with OS 10.10. Please help!
