Our very own Innes Borkwood recently completed his work on a textbook entitled Learning Stencyl 3.x Game Development: Beginner's Guide.

Available in both hardcopy and electronic formats (and beginning with a foreword written by Jon), the book provides clear, simple instructions that guide readers through the full game creation process -- from planning and iterating through their first game all the way up to publishing and seeking paid sponsorships.

Having served as a technical reviewer for the book, I can confidently say that Innes's book is a great companion guide to Stencylpedia for anyone looking to get started with Stencyl, particularly those who enjoy a little more structure during the initial learning experience. It's also a great resource for any educators looking to introduce game creation to their students.

I encourage you to check the book out and to let us and Innes know what you think!

Archives / Rename "visit URL..." block to "GET URL..."
« on: May 06, 2013, 07:25:49 pm »
I've never been a fan of the "visit URL" text.

"Visit URL" makes me think the block will open a page in a browser window. Since we're already using "POST" and since HTTP requests in general are a more advanced topic, I suggest we change the block text to make what's actually going on under the hood more clear (i.e., a "GET" request).

As of February 2013, this process should no longer be necessary. Let us know if this isn't the case.

Hey guys,

Not sure why the email links suddenly broke, but here's a workaround you can do until we get some time to investigate this:

1) Copy the text of the link, beginning with "http" (e.g.,
2) Use a URL-decoder tool (like this one) to decode the URL.
3) Remove "api/2/apps/" from the path.
4) Enter that URL (with "api/2/apps/" gone) into your web browser. If you did it correctly, you should see an "Index of" page containing a file with the ".plist" extension.
5) Click on that file (it's just a special text file), and once it loads in your web browser, copy its URL to your clipboard.
6) Use the URL-encoder/decoder tool to encode the URL.
7) The URL you want to open on your iOS device then becomes:

itms-services://?action=download-manifest&url=the encoded URL you copied in step 6

Paid Work / [$750] Game and soundboard app for record label [FULFILLED]
« on: August 30, 2012, 08:19:06 am »
A Stencyl user was awarded a contract to complete a game and "soundboard" app for a NY-based record label. The game is about 75% done, but the developer had to drop out due to unfortunate real-life issues. This is a great opportunity for any Stencyl users but is time-sensitive, so please reach out to me by email if you'd like more information.

Archives / Allow optional limits on Number attribute values
« on: June 02, 2011, 12:20:59 pm »
It would be useful to allow Behavior developers to optionally set limits when defining Attributes, the same way they can currently set the default value. This would confine user entries on the Actor Editor's Behaviors page in an effort to potentially prevent runtime errors.

E.g., min. value, max. value, whole number restriction

NT. Currently, the Actor is created in the root of the hierarchy.

1) With a game open, go to Game Settings and change the name.
2) When prompted, choose Yes to save.
3) Close the game, answer anything at the save prompt, and notice how two games appear in place of the other, one having the original name and one having the new name.

Old Bugs (1.x/2.x) / Make compiler error messages read-only [b373]

NT. Currently, the text field is editable. Also, since the OK button doesn't have focus when the popup appears, instinctively pressing Return inserts a newline at the top.

Archives / [Aesthetic] Add Friend popup style is inconsistent

NT. I can't think of another place where we use this style of dialog, and the icon is pretty generic.
