Ask a Question / Re: How do i make my character punch?

Also, regions. I remember I used them a lot in my first game. You can make a lot of stuff happen or stop happening when an actor enters a region. Again, tutorial.

Yeah good question, but I highly doubt you're "locked" into 60 fps. I'd be surprised if that was even the default, but then once a few years back, I was surprised. It can happen.

I can't help you with that, other than to say you may get more help if you phrase your title in the form of a question. People shouldn't have to open your post to get a clue what your question is.

Global (game) variable (attribute)? They're good for any scene. Also, haven't done it, but can't you make a behavior for an actor and use that behavior for other actors or other scenes? Not sure, only on my second game. Sorry if my help is suckie, but it may be better than no help. And it may not.

I'm fairly new to Stencyl, but deep into my 2nd game, but since nobody has answered yet, I'll try. First of all I recommend doing a couple practice games that are tutorials, that are similar to what you are trying to do.

I would use Photoshop (expensive) or Gimp (free) to make at least two images of your actor, one normal and one with a punch thrown, or grab 2 images from the internet if you're not worried about copyrights. Or get free images in the packs offered here. More images (frames) make it smoother, but there are of course disadvantages as well. Import the 2 images into one actor in Stencyl, experiment and adjust the frame timing to your liking. You can customize the collision zone of each frame I believe, or maybe it's just the whole actor. Been awhile since I did that.

You could trigger your animation various ways, like on a mouse click event, but you probably want to trigger it with a collision event. I am rusty on the collisions, it's been a couple years. My current game has none. You can start and stop your animation or switch to certain frames, see attached. You can make it loop or not loop.

I realize I may not be much help here, but I try since the people here are nice and usually help me. If I could offer one piece of advice, it's do the tutorial games, or at least the pertinent ones. I often don't want to, but I'm always glad I did. It definitely saves time overall.

Ask a Question / Re: [SOLVED] Confused. How do I add an image?
« on: December 26, 2019, 11:42:07 pm »
On the outside chance it could help someone, it was real easy to make my image show up on mouse release instead of when created. I just put that 3rd line into the "On Actor" event, and left the 1st 2 lines in the "Created" event. I was afraid I couldn't do that because I thought an image would be a drawing event. Thanks again Justin for setting me straight. Now I can sleep tonight.

Justin, Thank you sooooo much. Worked perfectly.

Justin, thank you very much. Seems simple enough, I don't know why I didn't think of it. However, I still can't get it to work. I assume it must be in a “when drawing” event, but I've tried it other ways. I've tried typing the file name with the extension and without. Is it needed? I've triple checked spelling. I've tried simply attaching it to the screen (preferred), and I've tried drawing it onto a blank image, which is the only way I can figure out how to draw it. Do I use the drawing, or the images blocks? I noticed that fill a circle works perfectly, while draw a circle does nothing. Also I noticed that the error is a behavior error for an event, not a behavior, but I tried putting it in a behavior as well. Is it possible to draw an image on mouse release from an actor (button)? Prefer that, but probably asking too much. Any ideas? Very frustrating and humbling. If I could just get an image to show up anywhere on anything, I would consider that a huge accomplishment for today or this week. Thanks again.

Ask a Question / [SOLVED] Confused. How do I add an image?
« on: December 26, 2019, 06:27:38 pm »
I've spent about 5 hours on this and I feel like an idiot. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to draw an image in a scene. I realize I'm supposed to make an image, and then the image instance, but I can't exactly figure out how to do that. I'm trying to load an image from a file. I've put the image in a folder I made called "extras" in the particular Stencyl game folder on my computer (per instructions). When I click the drop down triangle under draw "image from file", my only choice that makes sense seems to be from game attributes, but you can't make an image or image instance game attribute. I've tried making image and instance attributes everywhere, like in behaviors and events, but they don't ever show up as a choice. And yes, I checked the boxes for those attributes to activate them (I assume). I'm very frustrated, as it seems like it should be a simple thing to add an image. Could someone please provide a clear, simple step by step? It would be very much appreciated, either that or I'm going to try making a whole new scene using screen shot, with a one frame actor, and completely forget about using images.

Windows / Mac / Flash / HTML5 / Re: HTML5 will not load
« on: December 21, 2018, 08:22:34 pm »
my game would compile and open, but it would be stuck on the loader. I waited for 5 minutes

Sounds familiar. Real, real familiar, but it's a problem in Windows too.

Chit-Chat / Re: "If a tree falls" thought exercise

has this tree fallen somewhere without an atmosphere?

Good point. Yet another variable (or "attribute" for us Stencylers).

Next up: Schrodinger's cat.
Then after that: Winnie the Pooh's mating call.

comes down to how you define "sound". As a sense it wouldn't exist if noone is around to hear it. But as a wave it would exist, because physics

If you consult Merriam-Webster, it seems merrak is correct:
Definition of sound (Entry 1 of 7)
1a : a particular auditory impression
1b : the sensation perceived by the sense of hearing
1c : mechanical radiant energy that is transmitted by longitudinal pressure waves in a material medium (such as air) and is the objective cause of hearing

1a and 1b indicate that there must be an eardrum present for sound to exist.
1c indicates that there merely needs to be pressure waves present for sound to exist.

It seems that until we can get our act together, and we can agree on one definition of sound, it's impossible to solve the thought exercise definitively. Good discussion for insomniacs. Haven't seen Winnie the Pooh yet, but I've seen tracks and scat, and heard his mating call.

Chit-Chat / "If a tree falls" thought exercise
« on: December 20, 2018, 11:19:07 pm »
Now that I'm sober I don't sleep. While laying awake last night I was thinking about the popular thought exercise "If a tree falls in the forest, and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound?" (There was a storm, and I live in a hundred acre wood.) One might be tempted to say that one knows from experience that it of course makes a sound. Well first of all we must clarify what we mean by "nobody" or "somebody". Can "somebody" be an animal of some sort, or does it have to be a human? The answer to this determines the answer to the original question. If there are no animals or humans, there are no eardrums. If there are no eardrums, there are no sounds. The tree, or whatever it smashes into does not make a sound. Eardrums and brains working together is what makes sound. The tree falling makes variations in air pressure, which travel though the air. If an eardrum gets in the way, it vibrates. The brain turns the vibrations into sound sensations.

Somebody please argue with me. I'm not really sure about this. Also, do plants hear? I know they respond to sound (or actually, pressure waves in the air), but I don't think that they hear sounds in the traditional sense.

A search engine. I searched something like "top best free game maker", then looked at several lists. Stencyl was in most of them.
