Ask a Question / Looking for a level designer
« on: December 26, 2019, 11:22:08 am »
hey all!
For 2020 I am planning a new tutorial series which requires some decent level designs. Ive tried a few itterations, but as a developer, nothing really satisfies my needs haha. It will be a pokemon-like game including a few "monsters" with battle mechanics and the works.

Since this will be for a free tutorial series, I am not asking as a paid job, but I would be more then happy to develop a backend to your needs. Would like to discuss the details in a private conversation.

If you are interested, please PM me, or send me a message on Discord:

Ask a Question / Y-speed gets an odd value when standing
« on: October 16, 2019, 03:38:58 pm »
Hey all, long time no see!

I came acros the following issue where my Y-speed gets an odd value whenever the tiles span over the width of my actor. When I move my actor even a pixel over the edge, the Y-speed gets to a nice solid 0. This is the first time im seeing this, so I dont know where to start looking. Ive double checked all collision settings, and both the tiles and actor has a simpe box collider.

Only thing I can think of is that the tile size is 20x20, and the seemingly 3 tiles that im touching in the second screenshot, are actually 6 tiles.

Tia!

Hey all!

It's been a while since I uploaded new content, but I finally managed to finish up my latest (revisited) basic platformer tutorial series. The old one had to go since the graphics are no longer available, as well as I am using much better techniques in this new version. You can go check out this new series along with my older ones right here:

http://www.theindiestation.com/stencyl/

Besides these free tutorial series, I've also released a platformer starter kit a while ago with some high quality control systems and game mechanics. At first I was working with a marketing guy to get the word out, but I've decided to go down the community road and dropped the prices significantly for them to stay like that (even tho a tip would always be appreciated =) ). You can check out these kits (both free, light and full versions) on my itch.io page:

(All feedback is welcome!)

Ask a Question / Not able to compile for mobile anymore
« on: April 30, 2018, 01:49:40 am »
Both the logviewer and generator log don't provide my any usefull inside. The initial compile for mobile went well until somewhere at the end. It never got to show the "sending to device" window, so it means something goes sideways during compiling.

Cheers

The new Stencyl build has thrown me more error messages then ever before haha. This one happened after I imported a tileset of 2x3 tiles which are 64x64p big, and wanted to place them in my scene. I've also noticed that the toolset wasnt shown properly? I also had to press the "Dont show again" button around 4 times before it actually went away.

EDIT_1
So it turns out the tileset doesn't wanna show up at all?

EDIT_2
After trying reimporting with just a single tile Stencyl didnt freak out, but it simple wouldn't show the tile (knowing the issue that the scene wasn't set up for 64x64 tiles). After that, I made a second scene that was set to 64x64 tiles, but still no tiles showed up. Then I again tried importing the whole tileset, and this time everything goes fine. As expected, the tiles don't work on the 32x32 scene, but work like a charm on the 64x64 scene.

Ask a Question / Not able to compile for mobile anymore [temporary fixed]
« on: February 03, 2018, 01:03:58 pm »
After numerous attempts at getting the right settings like I have done many times in the past, I am not able to compile for Android. First thing I noticed is that it gives me an error message after I've (re)downloaded the android SDK tools when I press the apply changes button (see log called "Apply Changes"). And halfway compiling the actual game, it just gives me another error message of which I can't find the source from (see log called "Compile").

Cheers!

Ask a Question / Mobile specific issues and challenges
« on: December 25, 2017, 11:24:35 am »
Hey all!

I would like to know what the most common issues are you are running into when developing your mobile games. I know allot of people want to know how to implement ads into their games, but this is going to be a whole other topic that I will start to cover once I have found my own stable solutions.

Let me know!

Chit-Chat / I'll soon be getting back at recording tutorials
« on: December 24, 2017, 11:21:25 am »
Hey all!

It's no secret that I have been away for quite some time, which I really needed to figure out some important things in life, including TheIndieStation itself. Reason being is that even tho I love to make video's for all of you, but it shouldn't get in my way of the rest of my work because the bills don't pay themselves haha!

This does mean that some things will change, with the biggest one being that I will be working together with a "publisher". I've put it into quotes because he's actually just a good friend of mine who knows his way around marketing, and getting people to see my material with as main purpose, generating some sort of revenue to keep TheIndieStation from becoming a huge expense. This person will eventually take the task on him of deciding which mayor content will be paid for, and what ends up being free.

This doesn't mean that I will no longer be uploading free tutorials! I will still upload smaller tutorials that will cover allot of interesting problems that most of you guys still struggle with. So I hope to see you guys soon again, and I really hope you guys understand why I had to make these decisions!

Ask a Question / Streaming the development of an un-designed game
« on: October 07, 2017, 06:34:27 am »
Hey all,

The idea of doing some live streams have actually appealed me for quite some time now, so I've decided to just give it a go. As the title says, I will be streaming the development of a game that has pretty much no design worked out, other then that it's going to be a 2D top down game, called "The community". Why that name? Simply because the mechanics that I will be adding to the game can be decided together with you guys, or basically the Stencyl community.

You will find the stream on my Youtube channel.

See you there!

Ask a Question / What are you looking for?
« on: July 08, 2017, 05:04:29 pm »
Hey all!

Last week I slowly started to get back into recording my tutorials. Currently I am only recording and editing them, instead of releasing them directly like I normally do. This allows me to have a more steady upload rate, and thus a better shedule for you! The estimated date in which the last couple of videos of my Basic race game with AI tutorial series will be uploaded, will be July 14th.

After my current tutorial series is done, I will start planning out the next one which is going to be another advanced one that I know you guys will LOVE! More about this can be found later in this post. Another issue that I am trying to solve, actually requires your input. Untill now I just recorded my tutorials in a way that I thought was what you wanted, but the truth is, I never actually asked about your opinions. So I am really hoping that you will drop me some valuable info in this topic, so I can take it with me when I am starting to plan out my next series. Below you will find some questions I would like to have your input on:

1.) Why is Stencyl the game engine of your choice?
2.) Have you ever tried another engine, and why don't you use it anymore?
3.) Do you have serious plans in chasing a gamedev career, or is this just a hobby?
4.) What are your biggest fears/challenges as a (hobbyist) game developer?
5.) How long do you prefer each tutorial to be?
6.) How often would you like to see a new video being uploaded?
7.) What are you missing in my tutorials?
8.) Would you like to have more detailed explanations of complex functions?
9.) If I would also create paid tutorials series, would you be interested in buying them, and why?
10.) Would you like to actively help and spread TiS content if there was a reward system in place?

Some of these questions might not sound logical to you, but your honest answers can help me decide which way to go, and make sure TheIndieStation will only grow instead of me just running into the wilds, only to figure out that I could have spend my time much better on other things!

Happy developing!

I will also soon be doing a giveaway that will definitly come in handy for allot of developers out here, but more about that will be revealed soon =)

Extensions / Sending info to error window
« on: June 27, 2017, 03:34:55 pm »
Here is the situation:
With the extension I am creating you are able to create mobile controls using blocks, but there are some cases that might leave the player able to spawn multiple on screen controls in the same place, or in a place where they overlap. When this is the case, upon compiling I want to stop the compiling and show some text in the error window that pops up when there is an issue with compiling.

Is there a way to do this?
Thanks!

Shared Resources / Minigames project files [marketplace]
« on: June 18, 2017, 04:05:05 pm »
Recently I started to create several minigames that I was planning on putting into the sidebar of my website. Today I turned away from that idea, and decided to put these small games up for sale for a very low price. You can purchase these project files to learn how to create the desired game, or use it as a base for your own new project. You can also support TheIndieStation creating FREE tutorials by purchasing the project files for a higher price. More ways to support TheIndieStation and the community can be found on my official webshop!

So my plans for my MobileGameKit is to wrap it up into a nice looking extension. The first 2 hours went flawless up till the point where I had created 2 custom blocks that simply printed something to the logviewer. Great!

Then I started to add a loop to my code which looked like a basic JS for loop (for var i = 0; i < 10; i++). This didn't work because it turns out in haXe you need to use an itterator, so I changed it to (for i in 0...10). But then I started to get an error that got my stuck for the past 2 hours. I have put my googling skills to the test, but coudn't really find a solution, nor an explenation about what it means other then something about an old haXe syntax. The problem is that even after I have removed everything back to the bare bones, I still keep getting that error, even when I removed my extension and started from scratch. So hopefully someone can point me into the right direction here!

The error:

The block I created and placed directly into a scene event (not a scene behavior) in a scene called "scene":
