Chit-Chat / HTML5 and Poki
« on: October 29, 2019, 08:16:34 am »
Hello Stencylers,

For the last year I have been working with a platform called Poki to publish my mobile and flash games to their site as HTML5 games. It has turned out to be way more profitable than the old fash licensing set up, you share the advert revenue with Poki 50:50. They provide you with a dash board to keep track of stats and rev. You need to implement their API into your game which can be a little tricky. Currently I send my game to another Stencyl user who implements the API for me for a small fee. If you are interested in submitting a game then have a look here https://developers.poki.com

Here is one of my games on poki https://poki.com/en/g/knight-brawl

Feel free to ask me any questions here.

iPhone / iPad / Android / Rowdy Wrestling
« on: August 05, 2018, 11:59:35 am »
Hello!

A couple of weeks ago Suitcasenuke and my self released a game called Rowdy Wrestling!

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/rowdy-wrestling/id1378365823?mt=8

Its a wacky physics based Wrestling game where the object is to throw other wrestlers out the ring.

We got really good features on iOS but things are a bit harder in iOS 11. We got around 360K downloads in the first week and around $32k in rev.

Hey Stencylers,

I finally released Big Shot Boxing! been working on this game on and off for 2 years. Im really happy with the final result.

It is currently featured by apple world wide, it was a crazy busy week with lots of big name games releasing so I didn't get the best feature slots, but its going ok so far.

« on: June 17, 2017, 03:55:56 am »
Hello fellow Stencylers,

suitcasenuke and myself are back again with a new game, Touchdowners is a wacky physics take on American Football. A 3 vs 3 match where you control all 3 of your players at once. You can jump forwards, backwards and throw the ball. Its chaos in a fun way.

Also maybe its the first commercial stencyl game with camera zoom?

see the trailer below, Ill post download links when its live.

Mechanics Mini Jam / Mechanics mini Jam Winners Announced!
« on: April 26, 2017, 12:27:53 pm »
I have decided I fancy hosting a little informal mini jam in a couple of weeks. Its a mechanics jam so will be purely based on mechanics, not art or sounds.

Its going to be very informal but there will be one "rule" that will be announced the day before the Jam starts.

Since I will be judging the jam the games need to be flash or html5 since I don't have a windows machine.

prizes will be $100 to first place, $50 to second, $30 to third. Paid Via paypal.

Im hoping it will encourage people to try some new weird an wonderful prototypes, I'm interested to see how removing any focus on art will effect the type of games produced.

Chit-Chat / Is Flash dead? no, no its not.
« on: December 29, 2016, 03:35:51 am »
Ive seen people saying it a few times in the forums recently. Flash is not in a great place, especially with the FGL flash marketplace being shut, but its definitely not dead, yet. Looking at the stats from my sponsored games this year, they are still getting millions of plays. Wrassling for example has around 6million plays in 8 months on one site, even with ad block, the portals are still making money.

I have actually made more money from flash this year than any previous years. 2 major portals have e-mailed me in the last year asking for games, another regular portal I've been working with for a couple of years is looking for games. Im wondering if there is even a bit of a shortage of flash games after so many devs have moved away from the platform.

I make an average of $1800 per game, its not crazy money but still very much worth the effort in my opinion.

If you have perviously made money from flash games but now are finding you can't sell games anymore, Id be interested to here about it.

If you think you have a decent flash game and want to try to get it sponsored then get in touch.

If you just like to talk about "flash is dead" but have never tried to get a game sponsored, please shhhhhh  ;D

Chit-Chat / A look back at 2016
« on: December 23, 2016, 12:43:24 pm »
Thought I would do a bit of a rundown of my year on stencyl, its been an interesting one. First of all, thanks to the usual suspects, Folmer, George, the stencyl devs and the community.

Some numbers, iOS Downloads in 2016 were 4 million 10 thousand,

downloads for each app;
Dunkers- 2.30mill
Epic Flail- 639k
Battle Golf- 439k
Wrassling- 290k
Wheelie Legend- 59.7k
wheelie 2- 42.2k
Golf is Hard- 28.4k

Pretty crazy numbers, a big jump from 2015 which was 1.7 million. Dunkers and Epic Flail were the only 2 apps released this year.

I actually had a pretty frustrating year early on. I went through a real burn out at the end of 2015, I started and abandoned a lot of projects. I eventually released Epic Flail early 2016 but I wasn't happy with the finished product. The lack of inspiration continued for the first part of 2016 where I started and abandoned a couple more projects. Finally around April I prototyped Dunkers and Folmer and I decided it had good potential. It was nice to finally break out of the slump. My wife had a baby in May which was awesome but also made the game building a bit tricky. However the launch in July was awesome and redeemed the year.

Flash sales,
During 2016 flash went quite well, miniclip.com got in touch and have sponsored Wrassling, Battle Golf, and Dunkers. 2player.com Sponsored Dunkers and Temple of Boom. I'm also preparing Dunkers for a new sponsor that got in touch last week.

Based on the momentum from Dunkers I'm looking forward to having a busier and better year in 2017.

Chit-Chat / Things I'd like to see built into Stencyl in 2017
« on: December 13, 2016, 06:07:24 am »
2 features that I personally feel would add a lot to stencyl are,

Camera Zoom
Pitch control for sound

Camera zoom would open up a lot of opportunities for interesting concepts. I have a custom version that I am using in a current project and its an awesome feature to have.

When using Unity I almost always add a little bit of random pitch range to sound effects. Its nice to add a little bit of variety to sounds, especially ones that are repeated such as explosions or a ball bouncing etc.

I know they are both possible in stencyl so it would be nice to see them built into the engine.

Journals / Big Shot Boxing
« on: December 08, 2016, 01:54:49 am »
Never made a dev log before  :o

Now I have a bit more free time I thought I would try it out for size.

This is Big Shot Boxing. It started of as an arcade boxing game where you just have 2 inputs, uppercut and move back. After playing around with it for a while I felt it was a bit too repetitive so have expanded it into a reasonably full featured boxing game.

Its still very arcade in how it controls but now it has 3 punch types (Jab, Cross, Uppercut) and you can block. All the punches move you forward and the block moves you back.

The GIF below shows the stun mechanic, at any stage of the game you can get hit by a punch and become stunned, If you get hit again while stunned you will get knocked down. Every time you get knocked down there is an ever increasing risk that you will stay down and lose the fight.

That will do for post one, ill go into more detail about the games mechanics in the next post.

Chit-Chat / Advert Banners
« on: November 22, 2016, 06:50:42 am »
Has anyone had any success with Advert Banners?

I see people talking about implementing them all the time and see a few games using them, but do they actually have any worth?

From my experiments they earned very badly, but were also on the screen all the time looking ugly. Interstitials are good as they are proven to earn and once they are closed the game shows no signs of adverts.

Started a basic idea, 2 characters with ghost busters like beams moving a monster around, not sure where I'm going with it right now.
