Paid Work / Re: Anyone willing to create a small project with me?

Ergh sorry to let you guys down with not having anything, but once again my computer crapped itself. Not only did the hard drive stuff up, but now alot of the things inside have stopped working, mostly because all i have is a laptop and it is about 3-4 years old (It still run new games on it though!), it seems because everything has overheated too much, for too long (I play games on it, since it's all i have) and laptop fans are not really that good, and it gets hot quick when I play games.

So I won't have a computer for a little bit, but possibly i could at least start something on someone else that i knows computer maybe. No guarantee though.

I hope you guys are not rushing to get this done, since this was a small side, side project anyway.

I would have said yes, if my hard drive didn't crash, and didn't have to get a new one... I had the giant robot smashing his arms, and also that little one, the one that you said wanted to look like a virus, done. Well now I'll have to do them again, but since I've already done it, it shouldn't take too long to do it again, I'll have one of them up within a few days I hope.

So. Damn. Angry.

Remember kids: BACKUP. EVERYTHING. EVERY SECOND.

For the stuff unrelated to the game, yeah we should talk through other means.

But I think for related stuff and updates, it is easier to talk here I think, since all three of us can see it at once

Also ipe java3d is no longer developed, supported and updated any more I suggest looking at jMonkeyEngine, I haven't used it but it looks good, and it is also it's own IDE and looks very much like eclipse.

Well, when I say scratch, I mean learning from tutorials, then starting again and trying to do it off my head. I basically got to the stage where I draw an infinite floor and ceiling, with flat textures, can move around with keyboard and mouse, crouch, jump. Also a render distance limiter (Fog) But that's about it. Drawing walls and collision is going to be a damn pain in the ass..... Not sure where to start lol. Also it is not very efficient and runs at 30 fps with just that. Adding textures or models is going to kill it to like 1 fps lol.

Getting a library for eclipse/java that utilizes the graphics card seems the way to go. Don't know where to start there either haha.

Well maybe one day where I feel comfortable with writing it all from scratch I'll be up for it

The thing about this project was to take our time and take a really long time to complete it, and spend little time as possible to work on it, as to not burn out so quickly. Don't even think about this project for a few days/week or whatever and come back with a fresh mind. This is more like a side, side project for all of us, so a deadline does not matter at all. could be a month, could be 2 years. How ever long it takes us.

I still do want to work on this, but I am taking my time, and trying not to worry about getting much done, which is still making me want to finish this in the end. I am surprisingly not burnt out/lost interest from this project yet, since I haven't done much yet.

it's the reason why I haven't produced any thing for a while, but I still have the energy, and will get to drawing when I feel like I am in the mood for it.

Also I am learning 3D games from scratch just using pure java (with eclipse IDE) and it is going pretty well so far, so that is taking a little bit of my time as well. (Also does anyone know a good library or whatever it's called, cause right now my programs are not using the graphic card, and FPS is pretty low for not doing so)

Yeah we are still doing this, It's just my exam week, so I am trying to focus on studying, and I will be free for a week or two next week, and then I can get started on the other enemies, and animations etc.

Also what about the terrain? like the floor/grass/buildings/walls etc. How are we going to do this? what will they look like? futuristic?

Thanks!

Also what exactly do you mean by slamming on the ground? Like it jumps up in the air, than slams it's whole body/lands on the ground, causing a shock-wave, or tremor of some sorts? or something else entirely?

Hmm... ok so the town idea we should throw it away in favour of something a bit simpler like just trying to stay alive? Also is it going to consist of a set number of levels and waves, or just infinite waves till you die?

I had a go at the spinning one, but it just looks like blades spinning around, not sure if this is what you guys had in mind, I can try something else if this doesn't fit.

Also if you tween it in stencyl and make it spin around, you'll see what it looks like spinning.

And yeah we could compile it on ipe's computer, i guess at this point it doesn't matter much though

Alright so I've done a little bit of work on the robots, i'm not sure if this is what you expected them to look like, so just give me a shout out if you guys want something different, maybe some examples/references, since these were just off the top of my head:

The bottom row is just a bigger version of the top row. The last two are the same, except the bottom/feet are a bit different, I can't decide which one looks better.

Also how many different types of robots/enemies should we have?

Robots it is!

Also we don't necessarily need a story for ipe's idea, we basically just give a small reason as to why the player is here doing what he is doing in the first place, and leave out any sort of story, and also if we go the 'infinite' waves/levels thing, then that is even easier since we wont really need an ending.

What about if we have the infinite thing, and make the whole game a "you are going to die, this is your story/ this is how you died" thing. We could have the town being over run as ipe suggested, and basically you would have to defend the town, to get back to the main game or whatever.

Depending on how well you defend the town, would decide how much 'Health' the town has left. We could possibly use this as a 'lives' system. Town blows up, game is over.

Alright so we need to decide on a theme so i can get to start the art properly.

Past, present, future

Zombies, Robots, inside-out people (Lmao)

(maybe all of the above + more?!)

What do we ultimately want the game to be.

any ideas you guys might have?

That is an awesome start, keep up the good work =)

Also should we have armour for some enemies? like some weapons will be good VS enemies with armour, and vice versa.

Enemy has 5 armour, weapon has 3 penetration, 5 wepDamage,
if penetration <= armour:
newArmour = Armour - Penetration
damage = wepDamage - newArmour

damage would equal 3

This is just a quick example.

Then you could have the player choose from a number of weapons, either at load level time (They pick the weapons they want to use for the level, either through buying or something else) or on the fly depending on what they bought/have.

what are your thoughts?

I am going to still try and practice directly top-down view, it would probably look better, not to mention the programming and art will be easier, only having to draw 1 direction instead of 4.

Also have you got in contact with lazyboygames yet? Have you worked something out with the programming?

Good work =)

Also what should the art be? I know its gonna be pixel art, but i mean should we have it directly on top, or have it like i have my art in 'Hopeless' a sort of side view top down thing. I tried some direct top down, but it doesnt look very good, i can't seem to get the hang of it, but the sideview topdown is easy for me. Which also mean that the behaviour that faces mouse, would be obsolete, and we could only have 4 facing directions (But still have freedom of movement in any direction)

What do you think?

Also wait for lazyboygames to reply to your inbox, I don't think he has started anything yet, but i don't know what he wants to do first. Have a talk to him and see what both of you can do

I had a talk with lazyboygames, and I think we are going for a top-down survival shooter, may or may not be zombies since its over used, what do you think of this?

Also drop a message to lazyboygames, he said he would get started on it asap, since i am going to do the art, and you two can do the coding, so try and work something out with him, so you can both have input with the coding
