Suggestion Archives / Re: A Center [actor] with [actor] block. PLEASE
« on: March 14, 2016, 02:55:01 am »
It is incredibly time-wasting to manually add half-widths and whatnot just to get spawned actors to line up right. We need a block for this, which might also include other useful options like left and right-align. Stencyl needs some serious workflow improvements.

There is no need at all for Stencyl to do this, we would just end up with an absolutely massive palette.

Just use custom blocks (if you havent learn to use them thats your own fault, nothing to do with stencyls workflow all the info for custom blocks is in the stencylpedia)

I'll attach a screenshot of the main custom blocks I created (best to create them in a behavior, and then upload that behavior to each new game). These work for my needs, but just make as many as you need for yourself.

Once you know how to make custom blocks its very easy to do. Hope that helps.

Have you tried changing the iOS version to a lower version in the settings inside stencyl? Playing around with the versions on different settings has fixed issues like this in the past so that is worth a try first.

Fixed Bugs (3.x) / Re: Problem with sound uploads in b8988?

Wicked thanks! Works perfectly on Mac. The drag and drop wont seem to work for me on PC, ive attached a photo of how my mouse changes symbol, but clicking the 'Import MP3' and 'Import OGG' works perfectly well though :)

Its really cool to hear of Stencyl being used like this! Sounds like its fun to do so hopefully you can continue it with the students!

Personally Ive only been using Stencyl for one year but overall found it great. When you consider it is a 'shortcut' compared to learning coding it is pretty awesome what can be done. Just look at Ghost Song/Super Dangerous Dungeons/Wrassling/Battle Golf/Epic Flail/Spiderling/Battle Slimes/Hue Ball/Mercurial Story (the list goes on, they are just some) it shows what can be done, they speak for themselves! Add on top of that the awesome little bits and bobs that Liberado and Ceosol (+others) do as prototypes and whatnot.

Expectations also have to be kept in check too. Things like online multiplayer working straight out the box is unrealistic. Plus if you watch any developer conferences on YouTube or read any Gamasutra articles you will see the issues and struggles devs go thru, regardless of what program they use. Software is a complex thing after all, I get more issues with Microsoft Windows then with Stencyl!!

Lets look forward to stencyl continually smoothing out bugs and progressing in features over time.  8)

Ask a Question / Re: Nightly Builds
« on: March 03, 2016, 07:04:37 am »
I think the latets builds might only be accessible to upgraded users, but here is the link: http://community.stencyl.com/index.php/topic,13789.0.html

Dont think there has been any new builds for a few weeks tho.

If you need to import sounds I would avoid the latest build because theres a big problem with importing sounds. Bug report is here if you want to read about it: http://community.stencyl.com/index.php?issue=219.0

Not too sure what the situation is with that bug so if you are working with sounds best to stick to an older version for the mo.

Ask a Question / Re: Compiling error - UPDATE Android SDK? -HELP
« on: March 03, 2016, 07:00:36 am »
I managed to sort mine pretty quickly. Not sure which bit of what I did sorted it but here is what I did.

 - closed stencyl
 - uninstalled the app from my device
 - reopened stencyl and changed the 'android target version' to the next one (cant remember which, I just picked any)
 - tried it on the device and it worked.

Chit-Chat / Re: WTF is wrong with the Kongregate Community?
« on: March 02, 2016, 12:18:38 pm »
One thing I will say is the game has only had 199 plays as I post this, it only takes a few people early on to score it low and it makes it look really bad. Some others will then follow suit as a result without giving a game a chance and giving their own honest rating.

Are you really telling me that this deserves the same rating as a lot of unfinished/really crappy games ?

Its not just limited to Kongregate, if you go thru the Google Play Store you will find lots of games that have far higher ratings then they deserve. Its the way things are unfortunately.

Its seems like people dont take more than 30 seconds looking into it and then rating it 1-star.

Unfortunately yes that can be the case. With so much choice these days people give up quickly on things and check something else out. The aim is to make your game likeable from the first instant they see it to try and avoid this.

Also it seems like people dont bother looking into the Tutorials. Almost every game i put a tutorial into the games and still always the same stupid questions do appear….

Thats the same everywhere. Lots of questions in this Stencyl forum dont need to be here, if people used the Stencylpedia tutorials they wouldnt need to post in the forum. As Rob says, you should make your tutorials mandatory at the start to avoid the problem.

Don't be too disappointed, try and learn what you can from it and improve it as much as you can. Then if needs be tweak it enough to justify a fresh upload and then compare new ratings to old ones.

2million downloads, beautiful number! Congrats :)

BTW I think Epic Flail is your best game yet, a lot of fun!

Chit-Chat / Re: Google Play Store to start supporting indies more?
« on: March 01, 2016, 04:06:17 am »
I think what that looks like is just Google's attempt to look like it is showing love to indies.

It may well be. But at least its better then nothing as was the case before.  :-\

From gurigraphics info it looks like 5 of the 15 games have less than 50,000 downloads, which slightly surprises me because with the way Google normally curate their app store I would have expected them to have only looked at apps with much bigger numbers (say 500,000). At least this shows they have somehow got some very new/smaller apps on their radar, albeit not many and its only a start.

I guess time will tell how they progress with this because they haven't exactly shouted about it to give it a proper launch, it seems more of a "lets do it quietly and see if makes us more money in microtransactions" type thing.

Chit-Chat / Google Play Store to start supporting indies more?
« on: February 29, 2016, 08:20:15 am »
As most people will be aware currently Apple are miles ahead of Google Play when it comes to actually taking any notice of indie developers. Apple tend to feature them a lot more.

But Google Play have just started a new curated section called 'Indie Corner'. I can see it from the home of Google Play on my device but not sure if thats the same for everyone. If not the section is here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/collection/promotion_3001ed4_indie_corner

Fingers crossed the Big G is starting to show more love to us small guys  8)

Ask a Question / Re: Game due on Monday
« on: February 26, 2016, 08:28:16 am »
We need to find out how to make coins important to gather

Thats up to you how to make them worth gathering, think about it in your game design. Perhaps the aim of the game is to get as many coins as possible, that makes them very important. Perhaps the player can unlock things like extra levels, or more characters with the coins.

we need help transitioning to the next level when the previous has been completed

Use a region and then 'switch scene' block, its all covered in the Stencylpedia: http://www.stencyl.com/help/view/regions/

we need to know how to export the game to a flash drive

If it needs to be playable then export it as a flash game, as documented here: http://www.stencyl.com/help/view/publishing-flash/
And then once the SWF is on your computer, move it over to your flash drive. You could also publish it to the Stencyl Arcade ( via 'Publish > Stencyl > Arcade') as a back up so it is then playable from any computer with an internet connection.

Hope that helps.

Ask a Question / Re: Swinging Ropes
« on: February 26, 2016, 02:33:47 am »
Ive never seen it done as a completely smooth rope. The nearest you can get is using a load of revolute joints. You can see a playable demo in this blog post: http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2012/03/19/basic-box2d-rope-chain-2-1a-version/

I know the sort of thing you mean, there is a really nice Unity extension that does it well (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_EpvUVMZ_Q ), but unfortunately Ive not seen anything via the box2d physics engine.

Just a curiosity, do you have the Facebook/Twitter app installed on the phone? This will help understand which part of the code can be wrong.

I have the Twitter app installed on my phone yes, but not the Facebook app. Hope that helps.
