Ludum Dare 32 / Re: Freddy's Challenge
« on: April 20, 2015, 02:21:02 pm »
I have just updated the first post with more informations about the game.

If I have some time I will try to create a post-compo version of the game. I am also thinking about writing a postmortem because I really enjoyed creating this game even though I am not very satisfied with the result.

I am quite disappointed... I didn't manage my time wisely and I ended up wasting a lot of time. I've submitted a demo version of the game in time for the compo, but there are a lot of things I had to put aside and the game itself isn't complete, but it's still playable. I could probably complete the game in time for the Jam if I wanted, but I cannot skip university today...

By the way, I changed the game name to "Freddy's Challenge". Why Freddie? As Natrium pointed out a few posts above the main character of this game looks like a real life person called Fred Pellerin. This is just a coincidence, but since I couldn't come up with a good name for the game, I decided to use this coincidence.

Some of the things that went wrong:
- The pencil was going to have a much central role later in the game.
- I would have liked to add more obstacles and challenges during the levels. I had so many ideas in mind, but no time for them. This is a pretty negative point since I did a lot of wasted graphics (= wasted time) for those ideas.
- I would have liked to add more graphics details in the scenes, but I had some issues with the software I use to draw and I had to switch software. Lots of wasted time. (On a positive note, I like the new software a lot. If you are interested it is called PyxelEdit).
- The game was going to have dialogs and I planned to use Justin and Irock's Dialog Extension, but I had troubles installing it, so I cancelled dialogs from the original plan. More wasted time.

But some there are also some positive sides:
- The new drawing software (see above) is really cool! I think I am going to use it for the next Ludum Dare. I am still new to this software, but I feel like I am already faster with it.
- I like how the main character turned out.
- The game logic took very little time to create.

You can play the game here . Read the instructions in the description before playing! I would love to hear your feedback.

A quick update on the game.

I was making very slow progress, so I decided to sleep for a few hours to clear my mind. This game is turning out bigger and more complex than expected, but I hope to complete it in time for the compo deadline (maybe I will cut out some things I originally planned though). Less than a day to complete the game! I have to hurry up!

Sweet :)

Glad to see you back on the forums too ;)

Thanks! Unfortunately I didn't have time for Stencyl this months (university and stuff...) but I decided to t put all the other things aside for a weekend and create this game for the Ludum Dare.

Is that character inspired by this guy or is it just a coincidence? Cause both have round red glasses and a striped shirt, and both are "storytellers".

Whoa! I didn't know about Fred Pellerin, but my character looks like him!

awesome arts dude. keep at it.

Hi there!

Just a quick warning: Freddy's Challenge is NOT complete, but it is playable. I hope you will still take a look at it since I spent a lot of hours on this game! There are a lot of things that are missing so I will try to fill the missing parts with a short description. If you have any question, feel free to ask!

Play it here!

You play as Freddy, a storyteller who loves stories. No matter how hard he tries, he can't create an original story. One evening he falls asleep and when he wakes up, he finds himself in a mysterious cave. The only thing he finds in this cave is a pencil. Help him find the way out of the cave!

-Arrows or AWD to move
-Spacebar to attack

The game has no instructions nor suggestions! (I didn't have time for them) If you get stuck, this are some suggestions:
- The first level/cave/dungeon to explore is the brown one.
- The second level is the white/grey one.
- After you beat the first level, you can move blocks if you attack them.
- After you beat the second level, you can double jump.

In the meanwhile, enjoy this gif!

AdMob / Re: [SOLVED] Game crashes when loading ad

Abliblablobla, do you think Admob will have to be merged with Google Services due to using the same SDK?

Maybe. I am also thinking about asking to Jon if we can create a simple extension that contains just the Google Play Services SDK and make it one of the default extensions. In that way every time we want to update the SDK, we will just need to update this simple extension. In addition it would allow us to create separate extensions (AdMob, Play Games, IAB and possibly G+, Analitycs, etc.) without creating one big and difficult to manage extension.

That's very strange. When you have time for the logs, please post the DMS (Device Monitor System) logs. To open the DMS in Stencyl : Debug > Android > Launch Device Monitor. Then test your game (making sure the device is connected to your computer). When it crashes you should see some (or many) red lines of errors in the DMS log cat.

It would also help to know what device you have and its Android version.

Without those info, it is very difficult to understand what's going on.

AdMob / Re: [iOS & Android] AdMob Extension [3.0]

Sorry for the lack of support in the past month. Unfortunately I had some issues to solve, but I will be more and more active from now on.

I will probably update this extension to include all the changes that Google made to AdMob. I hope to have a new stable version early next year.

Do you still have this problem? If so, please post your logs from the DMS (Debug > Android > Launch Device Monitor) when you are running your game. There should be a lot of red lines in the log cat of the DMS when your game crashes.

AdMob / Re: Using iAds banners with AdMob Interstitial, any problem?
« on: December 08, 2014, 02:43:41 pm »
Stencyl doesn't support iAd fullscreen ads.

There's no problem if you want to use AdMob when iAd is unavailable. There is a small chapter at the end of the documentation that briefly shows you how to use AdMob in this situation.

Do you still have this problem? If so, be sure to have the latest version of Stencyl 3.1 and the latest version of the AdMob extension 3. If you are still experiencing this problem, please post your logs (Debug > Logs > Generate Logs).

AdMob / Re: Do Interstitial need to be reloaded after shown?
« on: December 08, 2014, 02:37:46 pm »
Just wanted to confirm that you have to reuse the "Load fullscreen ad" block every time you use the "Show fullscreen ad" block. It may change in a future version of this extension.

I will take a look at this issue for the next version of this extension. Thanks MRWagoner for the proposed fix!

AdMob / Re: Admob extension question
« on: December 08, 2014, 02:33:45 pm »
There has to be some time between the "Load fullscreen ad" block and the "Show fullscreen block" in your code. Loading a fullscreen ad needs its time depending on the speed of your internet connection.
