Chit-Chat / 2D game genres

I don't play a lot of flash games so I would like to know what genres are oversaturated on browser game sites and which ones do you think there should be more of? :o

Old Bugs (1.x/2.x) / can't test my own games
« on: November 02, 2012, 12:32:20 am »
I forgot to add that Stencyl also doesn't let me upload to the arcade as a work in progress since this problem happened.

Edit: well no one has an answer for me so I guess I can no longer use Stencyl...

It's not old, I bought it last year. This problem happened randomly about a month back but I have been to busy to look into it. The weird thing is I can play other flash games fine but I noticed none of the copies of my game would work for me. I do usually run other things in the background but they don't effect the lag.

The only thing I can image is wrong is something my side with Stencyl or Adobe flash player 10. When I first discovered this problem i updated Stencyl and nothing changed bug wise. Adobe says Chrome updates it automatically so that should be up to date as well.

When I test play my game the start menu works fine with 60fps. When I start playing it has short lag surges that drop it to 20fps and back to 60 again. I looked at it just now with my normal open windows( youtube, livestream and 2 open Stencyl windows). I use two sometimes when comparing code blocks. It lags just the same with nothing but one Stencyl open while testing.

When i test my game with the stencyl software or the uploaded copy on this site it lags horribly. When i ask a friend to test it (the copy here) they see no lag. I tried older versions of my game with the software that used to play fine and they lag as well.

Not sure if this strange bug is covered already but does anyone know what could be going wrong for me?

I use the most recent version.

Game Art / More selection in Pxtone voices and noises?
« on: April 08, 2012, 06:07:23 pm »
Is there any way to find/download free voices and noises to add to the collection of the built in Pxtone voices and noises? I'm talking about ones that someone could not easily make in the editor such as lightening strikes, ambiance sounds, more drums, ext.

Game Art / Re: Irock's Music

Yep its in English =D

Sorry for flooding your thread but the manual downloaded as "RAR" file and I can't open it. =[
What software do I need for that?

edit: To help future people, Use WinRAR to open the manual file also my computer did not support Japanese so I got half English/ half random symbols in the software. I just deleted 2 files containing only random symbols to fix that.

So in every tutorial i see about pxtone, people just have premade sounds they add in. Can you make the premade sounds in pxtone? Also the pxtone website is in Japanese T_T... where do i click to download the newest version?

Thanks,
 Kara =]

Thanks guys, its really kind of you to help me out. I am new to this stuff and i'm just seeing what my boundaries are. After I finish my horribly boring action script3 book and get comfortable with making flash games as seen here, I will definitely download unity 3D and perhaps buy the book to it. Its funny that you guys mention Doom because I'd love to make a game of that type. In the future (far future) I hope to head design an MMORPG with first person view.  :D

Edit: oops unity pro costs $1500, I suppose I will be researching free ones then. :P

Resolved Questions / Re: What do you need to create a first person shooter?
« on: February 05, 2012, 01:53:48 pm »
Thanks for the reply! Is this software open source?  This is an example of the game type I'd like to create.
http://www.mochigames.com/game/urban-warfare-2/ Its a really basic game. I'm not afraid of a lot of hard work though I hope a game like this does not take years to make. (education and creation time)

I don't require a professional software and I's really like to find an open source one. =]

I refuse to believe a game like the one i linked requires mastery in javascript. =[ I can see doom being more on the expert level because of its size and is a bit more interactive. If there are any ebooks out there I could buy on this subject that would be awesome. I'm currently reading essential action script 3. If i need to buy a couple more 900+pg books ,that is fine with me.  ;D

Hi, I'm just wondering what tools would I need to create a game with first person view and basic 3D maps? I realize this probably can not be done with stencyl. Also how much code knowledge would this require?

Thanks,
Kara  ;)

Ask a Question / How do you make power ups?
« on: November 09, 2011, 01:34:16 pm »
I was thinking of making a top down shooter game and I was browsing forge to see if it had all of the code pieces I needed. I searched for power ups but nothing came up. I'm looking to make randomly spawned power up coins that give the player special abilities such as : Increased damage with gun, Run faster, Bomb, special weapon, shield ,ext. Also I would like these power ups to last a specified time. Is there anything on forge that could do these things? If not would anyone be so kind as to tell me how to create these things. =]
