Nice story :) thanks for sharing.

I remember a similar story of a developer struggling against the almighty magic of Googlelord's steam powered App Engine. Googlelord's machines were powerful and different form regular magic and there was no ".htaccess" to use against it! So the developer had to fight with mystic Servlets and even more mysterious ServletFilters to free his game loader of the evil gzipping.

If anybody finds himself in the same position (preloader not working on a Google App Engine server)  I can share the boring details. ;)

xD i guess you should share it just in-case someone runs into it, they ll then be able to quickly find solution just by searching this board...

Thanks for posting but I'm not sure what any of this is about.  :-\
Sometimes if you upload your ".swf" games on your own webserver, the loading screen of your game doesnt show up when the game is loading, I have provided a solution for that, just in-case someone might need it.

I recently made a game for for myself and was stuck when the preloader wont work and no-one liked to see the black screen for 5 minutes without knowing how much of the game has loaded and i got a lot of negative feeedback coz of that :/... so when i finally found the solution I thought i would share it with you all :

If you like stories read below, other wise just skip to the last paragraph :

Once on a distant planet called "Internet", in the land of "Web Servers" an evil Wizard named ".htaccess" posed a great deal of problems for poor little townspeople of the town "Web Developers". The Web developers liked to spread happiness throughout the "Internet" by using the medium of "Games". But the evil wizard threw a challenge of "disabled preloaders" towards them. Most of the web-developers were scared, some took refuge in places like "Kongregate" and "Newsground" as they helped most of them to show-off their beautiful preloaders.

But the great people of "Web Developers" did not know that to defeat this evil scheme of the evil wizard ".htaccess" all they had to do was disable gzip compression for their beautiful ".swf" files.

So one day a web developer took the challenge of ".htaccess" to his face and barged into his domain exploring all his schemes and his potential threats. He finally found out the core of the wizards magic in his hidden domain of "FTP root". He then gallantly appended the following lines into ".htaccess" 's evil file:

" Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule \.swf$ - [E=no-gzip:1] "
and he did so without including the quotes, by doing so he disabled gzip compression and ".htaccess" 's evil plans failed. The legend says that he has passed on this knowledge only to be spread out through all the lands of "Internet".
So please honor his word.

If you dont like stories read below:

And now for those who weren't interested in the interesting story written above:
The pre-loader( or loading screen) does not work sometimes because on some web-servers "gZip compression" is enabled... to disable it for ".swf" files all you have to do is,
open ".htaccess" file on your webserver and add the following lines without quotes:

" Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule \.swf$ - [E=no-gzip:1] "

this will disable it and the loading screen will start showing up again.

hope this help :)

Game Art / Looking for a UI designer - PAID![SOLVED]
« on: March 21, 2013, 01:05:33 am »
I am looking for a futuristic UI design, I am not satisfied with the current design as it is, so wanted to remodel the game graphically, all the mechanics are working and in effect.

basically the content is :-
> 10 buttons(Play, Upgrade, Credits, Help, etc.)
> 3-4 backgrounds
> Description box for the in-game marketplace
> 6 logos for weapons in the game

Contact me if interested also please tell me an estimate price.
I have attached some screenshots of the game with this post for a better idea.

It would be really neat if we could have the ability to organize our games in different folders in the welcome center. It would be really useful because then we wont have to go through a lot of trouble for version management, it would become really easy and we would also be able to manage huge cluster of games.

A game Jam sounds cool, but i really doubt anyone would be willing to participate in it unless some sort of prize is included, and getting a sponsor is not that easy either...

This is the first tutorial video i have ever made, please don't mind the crappy headphone mic quality, if you have any questions related to this or if you want me to make a tutorial on anything else in stencyl/gimp/FLStudio, just drop me a comment in here or message me, whatever you prefer.
For some reason in the end it did not show the light for player in the video, but trust me it works in the game, I really dont know why my screen capture program did not capture it :/
In this tutorial I show how you can achieve multiple lights effect exactly like in the following image:

Game Ideas / Re: Need ideas for my game! Any ideas works

No-one has mentioned towels yet. It's always a good idea to include a towel in an rpg. If there's not enough room for a towel, then perhaps a face-flannel would suffice.
XD is that "The Hitchhiker's Guide To Galaxy" I'm sensing here? XD

yes.. I only skimmed the description of, "Sword of Mana" But I think it said something about being a second game and being a Prequel.. (Sorry.. dont know how to spell it correctly..)

QUESTIONS: 1: I already know there will be races.. But will there be CLASSES? And if there are, what kinds.
2: Will there be any kind of custimizations? Like.. Creating how character looks. Like in Dragon quest 9?
3: What kinds of equipment will there be.. Will there only be 3 or 4 equipment slots like in the final fantasy series.. Or will there be a whole range of different slots of which to equip things into?(Head,Arm,Shoulder,Body,Waist,Hands,Legs,Feet,Weapon1,Weapon2,Weapon3,Acc1,Acc2,Acc3,Acc4)
4: Will this be a short game or a long game?

Thats all... For now..  :P

WOW! I guess i need to play "Sword of Mana" O_O...

To your questions:
1. Yes, I like to call them perks, and you can go down any path from a sneak thief to a hulk warrior. Namely right now i have thought of Marksmanship(archery), The Warriors Way(melee weapons), The Shadow(sneak), Thief(pickpocket and lockpicking). Thinking about complex classes like smithing, brewery etc. but not so sure i should pick them up right away or not...

2. Customizations, for now include, picking a race, type of armour(head, torso, arms, legs), which in-turn change the look of your character. You can work your combinations if you want.

3. Equipment slots would be the basic: head, torso, arms, legs, Weapon/Spell slot, Buff(1,2,3). You will have the ability to mark favorites and bind to shortcut keys[1,2,3,4 keys right above WASD] so switching weapons/spells during combat is made easier.

4. Well... not sure if I can count this into a long or a short game, for now I have mapped out 1 Main quest which itself is a combination of multiple small quests(roughly 40-45) and then I have mapped out 50 Side quests(might expand later) and then we are looking at 50 Errands you can run infinite times in the game(might expand these too)...

Trust me this is MASSIVE amounts of work, just mapping it all out is frigging hell so this is a long project, I might upload it in its initial to show how far I have progressed, but I guess the final game will start taking proper form in around 1-2 months and my estimate to complete all of this is by April next year, might not be possible, but still will try my best to get it done by then.

You know.. Me too.. Secret of Mana (Plus Sword of Mana, which is their second game, or first.. i cant remember..) has also influenced me.. but only since 2011, since that is when i have heard of it.
havent played "Sword of Mana" but if i can remember correctly Sword of Mana should have the story that happened before "Secret of Mana"... nonetheless... :D SNES games are evergreen for me :P
