Windows / Mac / Flash / HTML5 / Action Newton
« on: July 07, 2011, 02:53:53 pm »
Jump and shoot your way through each level before time runs out.
If you like physics and you like platforms, you’ll love Action Newton!
(That's the pitch I'm working on for now, suggestions accepted)

You can play it here.
Please note that I can't post it on Forge because I have entered the Summer Game Jam, so I can't update the game yet.

I'm going to launch it on Kongregate. It won't submit scores untill I publish it there (I tested them, and they work).
What I need from you:
Test it.
Make suggestions.
Bash it with negative and/or positive constructive criticism.

Thanks for your input.
Lastly, but not least: I hope you enjoy it. Have fun.

Chit-Chat / Backup. Do it.

Hi guys. This just happened to me and I lost about 5 hours worth (2 days) or work.

I made 3 mistakes, specially considering I should know better.
Mistake number 1. Let one day go by without versioning. That would have cut my losses in half.

Then, java (or stencyl) got slow. Maybe it ate too much memory (Windows 7 x64 will open java's appetite) and was feeling too fat.
It never happened before with stencyl. Whatever, I saved my work. I saved it again. I tried to shut it down. It asked me save again (here comes the second one). I said yes. If I had it saved, I should have left it at that. But I wasn't thinking.

It took forever and a half to save (are you feeling number 3 coming up around the corner?). I waited. Then I tried to shutdown stencyl while it was saving. Then I waited about three whole seconds. I shutdown my computer without the game beig completely saved (nobel prize for human error please). I ended up with a corrupt data.xml.

With this true tale, I bid farewell to you.
To one and all, I ask you to take heed, Augustus himself bestowed it upon posterity: Festina lente.  (more haste, less speed).

I never updated StencylWorks before. I think I tried some times and it gave me that "ensure that your computer is connected..." dialog. Just so you know,I do have internet, I published stuff and downloaded from the forge without a hitch.

Then I tried this patch:,1131.0.html

It broke my sound. Almost all my sound blocks say "Missing" (except "stop all sounds" and "set volume to %")
As far as I can tell, all the other blocks (actor, flow, scene, etc) are ok.
When I try to run my scene or my game, it gives me various errors, all to do with sound (the word sound allways appears somewhere in the error message boxes).

I went over the logs (I'm not a coder, but I try my best to help you help me) and saw a couple of things that don't sound right. Attached to this message is a single session log in which I reproduced all of the above errors.
Please take notice of the following lines (it might help you, I don't know):

36[LOG] Usergroup: Beta Tester
No I'm not. I wished so hard I were, I had a friend who installed this on my PC and then it was uninstalled again. I never had any username untill launch day.

112 to 119[LOG] Lots of problems there. Can't figure them out.

991 to 1006 Missing sound stuff.

6903 to 6907 DialogBoxCore is acting up. This is part of Greg's Cutscene pack just in case you were wondering. I have filed a bug on that resource pack topic earlier, but not this one.

Now, I can still work around all of this, because versioning is my friend. I have daily (at least) backups of my work, so I can revert back. In fact, I'm about to uninstall the whole thing now (don't worry, I AM sure that my game and assets are safe) and then install it fresh. I post this stuff here anyway for the sake of bug tracking.

[EDIT] I just tried on another game I had here with no sounds, and the game runs ok, but the sound blocks are still missing. Now I'm gonna make a clean install.

Shared Resources / [BEHAVIOR] Fire in 8 directions
« on: June 01, 2011, 02:08:53 am »
The actor shoots something in 8 directions. Look at the picture:

Reload times and projectyle type and offset are configurable.
I'm using it for a boss in a platformer, but you can use it for top down shooters or whatever.
I'm thinking of doing a series of these, (4 and 6 directions, wavy movement and any neat suggestions) and maybe bundle them up in one behavior or separate ones if there is enough interest.

Whenever I change my status to Available The light goes green but the text stays the same (Offline). Look at the pretty picture:

Bug reported. On another note, it took e a while to figure out that SW chat is just for "My Friends", and since I don't have any yet (I'm not crying, really, it's just something that got into both my eyes) I couldn't get it to "work". Maybe it is jut me, but maybe some others think their chat isn't working as well. Don't worry, I can use the IRC chat outside of SW.
