Windows / Mac / Flash / HTML5 / Working Title Game

Hello everyone,

I started to make a new game yesterday. I've ended up with so many unfinished projects and I really want to be able to have a new complete game to play.

The idea behind this one is similar to The Poppytales, in that it's a game where you play as characters from across my games and other stuff I've made and fight bosses. I'm trying to make this as simple as possible for me to do, since with The Poppytales it was getting a little difficult. I'd made about 20 characters, a bunch of whom had their own unique mechanics, and it was going well, but it felt like a bit too much for me.

So, this new game doesn't have a name yet, and I've made 3 out of a planned 81 playable characters (which I feel is better than 100+, and I did finish a game in the past with 64, so I feel like 81 isn't too much). Of course if I really wanted to I could go back and add more, since the amount of characters I've created for games and other stuff is a very high number.

At the moment, Poppytail, Easter Bunny and Gremlin Girl are in the game (this trio originates from my first Poppytail game), and about half the playable characters are planned to be from Poppytail games 1-4. There are two from Century Game too, but the rest are new characters who aren't associated with any other projects.

This leaves a lot of room for possible additions in the future, if that's what I choose. But for now, I want to stick with this smaller roster of characters.

I've also gone back to my crappy art style. The game's not going to have very good art/animations, and I think I'm okay with that. I tried making art by hand drawing it, but it was tedious to make and implement. So I'm going back to drawing everything in Pencyl.

Working on the first boss at the moment. I'm hoping that this game will be a lot quicker and easier to make.

I'm also changing up something that characters had in Easter Fun 2 (the aforementioned game I made with 64 playable characters): their attacks. In EF2, the characters all had attacks related to them, such as Daggercat throwing daggers, for example. Instead with this game I wanted to make a weapon system similar to Cuphead, except each character is locked to an elemental type and two weapons. I've come up with 11 weapon ideas, and 4 have been implemented into the game so far. They will also change colour depending on the element of the user (for example, fire characters will have red attacks, water will have blue, etc.).

I think for now I'll try and keep my other projects out of my mind. I don't want to say I've cancelled them, but I think it'll be easier for me to focus on one game at a time.

Chit-Chat / Website Possibly Taking From the Forums

Hey there,

I recently decided to Google the title of my book I wrote from years ago, and I found a lot of my old forum posts here (because my games have made many references and crossovers to the book).

Anyway, I found a website called From Googling "xmfahaisi" it seems like there's a bunch of Stencyl forum posts in the descriptions on Google. I was wondering what was going on with that? Is this some kind of malware site?

Just thought I'd bring it to people's attention.

I've been thinking recently about what the order in which I add new stuff to this game. I'm thinking about focusing on making bosses so that the actual gameplay can be done before adding in the rest of the game's playable characters. Other than that, been making some death screens for the game (I posted some pictures on Discord). This was just a quick little update. Going to continue working on World 2.

Been on a bit of a break from the game. Jenni la Crevette is done and I'm working on Wicked Lizard Hunter (Poppytail 4) at the moment. Hopefully if I can find the time I'll be able to add some more stuff into the game soon.

Tiny along with Snarly Dog are done. 20 playable characters are now finished. Working on a new character and boss at the moment. The character is Jenni la Crevette from Easter Fun, the boss is Bandanana from Rise n' Brawl.

Those two are finally done. Think I'll add in Tiny next because I have an idea for his moveset which won't require me to add too much new stuff.

Working on Exister (playable character #17) at the moment. Only 117 to go after that (yay!) It's nice to see the character select screen slowly fill up though. Hopefully I can finish Exister and his virus version today and move onto someone else.

Protagonist and Dragon-Fly have now both been added to the game.

Another mechanic I added to the game a while ago. For each playable character in the game, you can feed them potato chips. Each flavour has a different effect.

Also got some screenshots of gameplay as Protagonist and Dragon-Fly:

Characters 12-14 are now complete (Crystal from Christmas Time, Nursina from Poppytail 5, and Malhare aka Virus Nursina from the Easter Fun games). #15 (the first one for April) is in the works (Christmas Time's protagonist Protagonist) and #16's art I've been working on (Dragon-Fly from A Game About Trimming Hedges).

For some reason I have in my head I want to keep working on the playable characters for a bit, until maybe I get to 20% and then I continue on bosses. So, I'd be at about 12% once Protagonist and Dragon-Fly have been fully implemented.

An issue I'm having is music in this game. I'm thinking of using Eric Matyas' music for this project but I'm not sure what would fit the game. I'm sure I'll find some I like eventually.

This was the roster image I posted to Discord a while ago (with everyone except Protagonist and Dragon-Fly so far).

From left to right and up to down: Poppytail, Easter Bunny, Gremlin Girl, Alex, Nykolas, Nursina, King Ted, SLiM, Purple Shirt Guy, Kah Boom, Dream Fennec, Malhare, Rattlesnake and Crystal.

Anyway, I was also thinking about how much storage all this would take up in the game. The actor type for Protagonist was the 100th actor type for the game and I'm getting a little worried that maybe once I get into the higher numbers of characters Stencyl will start running out of storage or memory. The reason the characters are made as separate actor types instead of being all the one actor type like they were in Easter Fun 2 was to allow me to customise each character more, and having everyone be the one actor type would just be a pain for this game (EF2's with 64 was fine, but this game's starting roster is more than double that).

Should I maybe release a very early demo to see if anyone likes the game so far? I'm hoping some feedback would be useful.

I think if you have gameplay mechanics implemented and want some feedback before committing to too many level designs, an early demo would be useful.

I still need to renew my Stencyl subscription. I've got 11 finished playable characters now with a 12th in progress, along with 12 bosses. I might still need to do a bit more fiddling around with things before I start making a demo.

Ask a Question / Re: How to Alphabetise Lists?

That's a shame. I wanted to be able to add to the list every so often and have it reorganise itself in alphabetical order to make sure I don't duplicate any items. Thanks anyway.

Is there any way to alphabetise the initial values in a list for organisational purposes? Thanks in advance :)

Ask a Question / Stencyl Game with most Playable Characters?
« on: March 22, 2021, 10:41:42 pm »
This isn't really a question about making a game, but I wanted to know the answer to which Stencyl game has the largest amount of pre-made playable characters? One of mine (Easter Fun 2) has 64 in total.

This is just out of my own curiosity.

Bit of an update. I have finished making World 1! Of course, I'll probably need to go back and change things later on, but at least I have all ten bosses working now.

Now, my plan is to have twelve worlds total, but in one playthrough the player will go through a minimum of six. I'll be offering players the choice of which worlds they want to go to progress through the game. So, the player would start in World 1, then they could choose between 2 and 3, then between 4, 5 and 6, then between 7, 8 and 9, then between 10 and 11, and then 12 at the end.

I'll be working on World 2 next, which will have eight bosses rather than World 1's ten. 5/8 are originally Rise n' Brawl characters (since that game had 45 bosses total), and then we have Lizzie from Easter Fun 2, Leopard from Christmas Time, and then the Red Guy from Poppytail 4.

I'm not sure whether I want to add more playable characters or not yet since I've still got two unfinished ones. I've been finding it easier to make the bosses instead of the playable characters since they require less animation frames I have to draw.

Should I maybe release a very early demo to see if anyone likes the game so far? I'm hoping some feedback would be useful.

You know...i would cut scope if you feel its too much. rather have a shorter good game compared to a longer not so good game.
Maybe just shorten it.

I don't think it's too much. I'm thinking of maybe releasing a really early version of the game with the levels and playable characters so far.

I keep thinking of this game as kind of like being a bigger version of Easter Fun 2 (with various changes). I still enjoy playing EF2 even though I've done it a million times and I want to make another game like that where there's more to do, which is why the idea of The Poppytales eventually evolved into what it is now.
