Game Art / Quick question.
« on: December 30, 2012, 06:54:44 pm »
Just quickly looking for on advice on how both shade this slightly and make a run animation.

2
I was going to do all of that when someone said they were interested, but so far it seems no one is.

3
So I've looked around and a few people have asked for pixel artist, and I have always felt it was really bad to ask for someone to do the art for a game that you have the idea for.

But I've tried and tried and everytime I try to make a game I always end up dropping it because I just don't have the knack for pixel art, I can draw amazingly (hell I make indie comics) but I just can not sprite to save my life.

So if someone was interested, and actually had the dedication, please reply.

The only song of theirs I know is that "Handlebars" one, but it's pretty coo'.  o3o

They have two albums and one EP. Amazing stuff actually, and that's coming from someone who doesn't really enjoy rap. I'm a folk rock kind of dude.

I like it, but the one thing I would do is make him lean forward a bit more. Think of it as him pushing the shot forward - he'll be leaning toward the target by pushing his hand in that direction. His current pose is obviously a modified version of the standing pose - so he's too evenly balanced for his "shooting" frame. Additionally, the lack of movement (other than the hand and arm) between the two frames will make the change in frames when shooting less dynamic. I've attached a modified version of how I would do it... Feel free to make use of it.

If you don't mind, could I use this sprite you made?

I added this, the stand pose and my shooting pose like Blob said to do into a slow GIF to see how it would look. Opinions?

I don't know how many stances (is that the right word?) I'll need?
-Stand
-Shoot
-Jump
-Jump Shoot
-Walk (how many of these do I need for a smooth walk sprite?)
-Dead

Before I move on to other sprites I would like peoples opinions of the shooting sprite.

After two threads getting me where I am right now and instead of awakening those dead threads I'd go and make a topic in here.

So, 8-bit NES style shoot 'em up, as some of you already know, is what I'm trying to create as a first game.

Saying that, I have barely any pixel art experience as of yet, but I'll try my best and hopefully you guys with will help.

So this is my main character~ Right now lets call him Shooter Boy.

Edit: This is what I made for the shooting stance.

I think I'ma make him shoot some sort of elemental power ball so that it isn't to close too Megaman.

Please tell me how to make said sprite better, things to change etc.

I used to write short stories and comics for fun, I think that's what I first enjoyed about gaming as a medium.

So that shouldn't take me to long to get rolling.

As with most retro esc games story doesn't always need to be the selling point of the game, so simple outline of a story I think would be needed.

I think I'll go back to the mega buster type arm as I just enjoy that idea a lot more then say, "magic wielding dude", but I'll work on that tomorrow and post in this thread with whatever I scratch out.

Until then, thanks bros. You guys have made me want to stay here. .___. I just hope I don't seem too much like the little tyke.

Don't get down on yourself like that, it takes practice. :]

Remember, you're still a complete beginner. Trust me when I say that your first sprite looks better than a lot of first attempts I've seen through the years. <shudder>

Aaah thanks man, I have a new problem now.

I was going to originally give him a gun arm like Megaman but since Blobs re-colour and turned it into a hand I now think another way to "shoot" would be more interesting, such things as fire bolts or the like..

Man I do like them, makes me feel shamed at what I've made!

I don't know what to do now..

Hmm, a suggestion for the future, when you're a little bit more practiced, is to try and come up with more interesting character design. It's your main character, so you want to make him stand out a little bit more than others. You're just starting out though, so that may be asking too much.

I am going for a Megaman style game and did use him as a reference.

Do you think he would make a suitable main character anyway?
