Ask a Question / View-able Lists
« on: July 04, 2013, 05:48:35 pm »
Hey guys, Is there any way to, in real time, view the contents of a list (list variable) as you are testing a game? Any help would be greatly apreicated

Hey man, the game is quite unique. I dont think I've ever played anything like it. There were just a few suggestions I had. 1. game play feels a bit repetitive. I think adding a bit of randomness to the enemy positions would really enhance the game. 2. really just a suggestion, but it would make the game a lot more interesting if the characters blew up or had a death animation when they were shot. Maybe something a little more than turning red (or dark). As for the jumpy cross hairs, I didnt really get that when I was playing (windows 7, CHROME!). Definitely was IE :P . But yah, cool game. It is awesome to see people actually finish games. And that is coming from a person that struggles with that.

Ask a Question / Re: Upgrading to 3.0
« on: May 08, 2013, 12:46:34 pm »
I recently helped a guy port on if his games from 2.2 to 3.0 and it did upgrade, however, it did not work right away. There are a couple blocks that did not work very well in 3.0, as well as a couple of settings that seemed to have been changed in the upgrade. Also, with the additive of a new, optional, physics engine, some of the coding did not work very well with the new engine. (of course, you can chose to use the old one). So to answer your question, it is possible to export from 2.X to 3.0, however, it is in no way seamless at its current version. However, that does not mean that it will not be seamless when the final release comes. I feel fairly certain that the stencyl will either provide a full seamless upgrade system from 2.X to 3, or they will proved teaching on how to manually upgrade. Either way, I dont think it is an issue to worry about.

That is some very nice pieces of art. How long have you been drawing/designing. By the way, what kind of game are you looking to make?

I just finished a behavior, for a customer, that does this, and it is quite a difficult process to get a clean line with collisions. The way it has to be done is as your mouse is down, you have to place down little circles every couple of pixels, so that you create a line of actors. Then you draw a line over those placed actors so that the line looks smooth. There, however, are two main problems that you will run into. 1. when your player moves the mouse too fast, your behavior sometimes cant place the actors down as quick as the mouse is moving. this creates a large gap in your line of actors, making it possible for the player to fall through the line at those spots. 2. The game will begin to lag dramatically at around 150 to 250 actors on the screen (when using this technique) so you either have to create an "ink amount" that the players can use, and once they go past that, the cant draw anymore. Or you could end the game when they get to the desired limit. But either way you go, it is quite a difficult process to pull of.

Ask a Question / Changing actor physics in a behavior

Does anyone know a way to change whether the actor can be pushed or not in a behavior?

try using the crossfade block. You may be able to use that to get the desired effect..

Ask a Question / dragging actors without losing collisions
« on: May 06, 2013, 06:48:57 am »
Hey guys, I have been trying to come up with a behaviors that acts similar to the block sliding puzzles out there on all the app markets (see capture.PNG). However, the one problem I run into, is that if you use set the set X block to move the actors, you completely lose all collisions. In other words, when you move the actor with set X, the actor wont collide with stuff, because you are setting its X directly. Is there a way to move the actors by dragging them with your mouse, and still keep stencyl's built in collision engine. I tried using the "push self gently" block, however, when the block that you are pushing collides with the second block, the first one then pushes the second one with it. Anyone got any ideas.

Yes sir. So, I ended up re-building the whole thing in stencyl 3.0 and got it to work. Seems quite strange to me.

It turns out, as we were trouble shooting, the way the game is set up, there i an actor that follows the mouse, and then line is drawn for the coords of the actor. So we deleted all behaviors from the actor, and create a behavior that set the x & Y of the actor, to the X & y of the mouse always. We also store the x and y values of the actor in a global variable. Everything works great, until we add the "set (global variable) to X of self" and at that point the game runs, but the actor disapears.

Here are the logs when trying to run the game.

I know that bro, However, that way doesnt actually teach people how to do stuff like this, it just gives it to them. I prefer to teach people how to do it, that way they can turn around and understand completely what is going on.

I designed the behavior for a friend who has a stencyl 3.0 account, so i sent it to him, and me and him have been trouble shooting, so I will see if I can get him to send me some logs.

There are no errors. When I hit the Play game button, the game opens up fine. It displays everything correctly, However, the game coding does not function, as if all the behaviors had been removed. however, upon a quick check, everything is exactly like it should be.

Then what would cause a game that works perfectly in strencyl 2.2 to completely not work in stencyl 3.0. I used the export game / import game function in stency. Is it possible that the exported game from stencyl 2.2 is not accepted by 3.0. the game opens up and everything in stencyl 3.0. However, the game does not function. as if the code as been screwed up.
