when i try takeing a sprite from a sprite sheet i end up with the backgound of the sheet with the sprite is there any way to fix this?

Hi i have a few questions about the type of game i want to make.I want to make a game like Strikers 1945.
my questions are how would i go about the Scenes for it.What im thinking about is one long scenes with wave of enemies and a boss every few waves how would i go about doing that.if i could get any tips on that and anything else i need to know about the type of game im making.
