Chit-Chat / Re: Flappy Bird...What? How?
« on: February 11, 2014, 07:32:39 pm »
I don't know... There is something suspicious about this. It doesn't make sense. Why would the developer take flappy bird down? If he keeps it up, he could made alot of money and he would be set up for life! Nobody would just take down a app that's setting them up for success and giving them money. I just think there really has to be more to this...

I'm pretty sure he'll still continue to pull in money as long ads are being served in the copies that are already out there.

Some games don't load at all, others play sounds but are blank and some point to a 404 page. OSX + Chrome.

Okay I found the issue with the 404 errors (missing a slash in URL links). Games not loading and some playing blank sounds like it may be more of a flash issue. Which version of flash player are you running?

With having just sponsored and released my first Stencyl game, Lumber John, I decided that I wanted to try my hand at self-publishing. Over the last two weeks I managed to put together my own flash arcade, fairly basic, but unique enough I think to distinguish from all the other cookie-cutter portals out there.

It's called Hammerstache and you can check it out at http://www.hammerstache.com. I'm primarily focusing on hosting retro games (those with a distinct pixel art look). So far I'm just pulling from Mochi's catalog and FGD. Already got some games up on there from fellow Stencylers. I don't have a submission page yet, but if anyone's got any games retro-styled games that they'd like to see up here drop me a message and I'll be happy to feature them on the front-page at some point in the near future (priority is given to Stencyl-made games  :D).

Fixed Bugs (3.x) / Re: Site-locking not working

Glad I could help. I'm a programmer by day so it's just habit for me to dig into the source when an issue arises.

Fixed Bugs (3.x) / Site-locking not working
« on: December 06, 2013, 03:50:25 pm »
Just converted one of my games over to Stencyl 3.0 and site-locking isn't working for flashgamelicense.com. Attached is the StencylPreloader.hx that was generated.

These get setup in new() but they're never used. The code looks incorrect because the values in the functions are hard-coded and the getLockURL() is providing the wrong URL (it's prefixing the domain with http://).
Code: [Select]
//Site Lock & URL
var siteLock = true;
var lockURL = "flashgamelicense.com";

Then the functions for isSiteLocked() and getLockURL() look like this.

Code: [Select]
public function getLockURL():String
{
return "http://flashgamelicense.com";
}

public function isSiteLocked():Bool
{
return true;
}

This means the code is looking for the presence of http://flashgamelicense.com in the URL (which will never match http://www.flashgamelicense.com or https://www.flashgamelicense.com) but it should be looking for flashgamelicense.com as indicated in the lockURL variable.

Just the latest update. I'm currently overhauling the background graphics for the post-jam release.

Great job man! Well put together and lots of fun! When do you plan to release on mobile?

I plan on porting to iOS and Android as soon as I seal the deal on a web sponsorship.

Cool! How long did this take you? :)

I actually started it a couple days before the jam was announced so it's been almost a month in the making.

Well, this is my submission into the jam. I give you Lumber John. A platformer in the vein of classic 8-bit games. It's my first Flash game and also my first game made with Stencyl.

Description:
The forest has become overrun by monsters and the beautiful songstress needs your help! Take up your ax and save the day as Lumber John, a lumberjack with nothing to fear. Numerous magical doors have been placed in the forest to help you make your way to lairs of evil where you will do battle with likes of wizards and dragons.

  • Authentic 8-bit graphics (actually limited to the NES palette)
  • Chip tune soundtrack

The game is currently in bidding on FGL, but anyone can check it out at the link below as long as you have an account.

Game Ideas / Re: Burning Blue
« on: October 06, 2013, 12:39:04 pm »
Thanks for the feedback. That opening level is still a work-in-progress. The latest version is about 60% complete, see footage below.

Burning Blue - Dev Footage #2

I'm purposely not doing a full shmup level or having a gradual difficulty curve. This is because I'm targeting the hardcore crowd with this game and want to set expectations right from the get go of what the player can expect in terms of difficulty.

My structure for the levels is that I start with one of these boss fights and then the interior level ends with a boss fight.
