News / Re: Stencyl 3.0 - Design Once. Play Anywhere.
« on: October 03, 2013, 01:33:44 pm »
As per usual, the updates are very much appreciated, Jon!

The entire reason I go to the Stencyl website now is to look at this thread about Stencyl 3.0 info.

And it always makes my day!

Cheers

Did you even bother to read Jon's post? -_-

1) How does Stencyl handle the different mobile screen sizes?
That depends on the scaling mode you choose.  See this article for more details, although it is a little outdated: http://www.stencyl.com/help/view/mobile-app-scaling/

2) Is Stencyl 3.0 able to produce mobile games (Android+IOS) without a problem?
No, there are still some problems.  I think joysticks still need to be fixed, and Android doesn't have working purchases or a leaderboard like iOS has.

3) If no bad "coding" is done, are Stencyl 3.0 games pretty fast on mobile devices?
I think the speed is fine.  Larger games have memory problems, but it's being worked on.
Thanks, Rob.

I think I'll have to make the jump back to Stencyl later on in that case when it's more ready for some mobile-loving.

Until then, I'll continue lurking on the forums 8)

Hey everyone who is using Stencyl 3.0 -- quick question for youuuu!

But firstly, my apologies -- I'm positive these questions were asked before. And as often as I do visit the Stencyl forums, I just do not recall where the posts were located [nor did my search terms bring it up].

My primary desire is to create mobile games right now. I've used Stencyl a lot for a game I had been making that was desktop-targeted, but not mobile before.

So my questions (that I hope can be answered):

1) How does Stencyl handle the different mobile screen sizes?
2) Is Stencyl 3.0 able to produce mobile games (Android+IOS) without a problem?
3) If no bad "coding" is done, are Stencyl 3.0 games pretty fast on mobile devices?

As much as I love Stencyl, I'm at a toss up between using Corona SDK instead, which is just a completely different beast and a lot less easy to use. I like the montage of "code once for all devices".

As Photics has astutely pointed out, we've rolled out a new front page for real this time (if you're logged in, you can find it here too), and on top of that, the entire "Make Games" section has also gotten a redo.

None of this signals that 3.0 is here yet, but due to some special circumstances, I've been working mainly on the website and plan to do a little more work on it in the coming days.
That's probably for the best, since the website had for awhile mentioned a release date for 3.0 that had passed. Also, since not everyone views the forums, they only notice updates done to the public-facing parts of the website, so at the very least, this will allow them to know things are progressing (shame on those non-community people who refuse to integrate into our Stencyl cult society!).  8)

Instead, I request a portion of the game's revenue to go to charity, depending on how intensive the programming aspect was.
That's pretty nice of you.

Hopefully you get some offers. Donations are also tax deductible so...donate to the ASPCA! :)

Chit-Chat / Re: Making a videogame "company "?
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:29:41 am »
Agreed. Don't worry about even starting a company until you've created some games and so forth.

Hold off on the release of these games and then look at your creations. It may help you figure out your studio name.

Then when you've decided and created a good plan (for marketing, advertisement, etc) consider releasing them (you can bomb the public with all games at once OR space the releases out to have a somewhat regular release cycle).

Note that a "Studio" or "Company" needs a website too. You'll want to have that under your belt as well. Obviously, the domain name should be your company's name.

Anyway, until you have at least all these things, I wouldn't think about recruiting others yet (I don't think you were thinking of doing this yet though) or starting an actual company.

It's hard to make money with games that aren't very, very well done and pllished (time consuming) so definitely work on creating some games you'll feel will be successful.

Nah, you're completely right. The lack of official / (un)official feedback has been pretty disheartening for many users. It would likely have kept some of their complaints at bay (though they should realize that complaining is counterproductive for both them and the Stencyl team).

The Box2d collision problem mentioned exists in the current Stencyl version too. You can get around it, but the "fix" is not even close to being ideal. I've actually actually put my game on hold for that very reason. It's worrisome for me that it's still in version 3.0, but I DO like that it seems more acknowledged now.

As Photics is pretty much getting across -- even the bad news is still good news to hear about!

I don't even know if we're supposed to be discussing the beta, but the box2d problem is not the same in 3.0 as in 2.2, we have seperate issues and that I suspect is why it's not released yet, but that's 100% pure speculation on my part I have no inside knowledge other than my own experience using 3.0 to build my game
Darn! Hopefully it all gets addressed. Box2d seems to really be causing a lot of headaches.

And I believe you're able to talk about minor things -- just not the important things, such as new features and so forth that make 3.0 a great release.

Ty for the feedback btw :) Speculation or not, I like to hear it.

Windows 8 works great.

The improved boot time is just fantastic.

The start menu takes some getting use to, as does the new Task Manager, but it's nice and snappy.

Obama. Romney is the Anti-Christ!

I'd like to say "Ralph Nader" -- but I'm sure 99% of people have no idea who he is and I don't know if he is even running >_>

That's very strange. Never happened to me before o_o

Glad you figured it out though. Be sure to make a backup of your data in case a similar situation arises.
