Ask a Question / Re: images ->what dpi? (not dimensions)
« on: January 22, 2016, 12:14:14 pm »
OK - good to know and also I just saw no matter what dpi/ppi once imported into stencyl, the resulting images are 72 dpi

Stencyl already scales your games so that your images don't look really small on larger devices.  If using the recommended 480x320 game resolution, your 1280x800 device will use a 2x scale.

Ok - I think I am  starting to understand more - I was reading over on the android developer training and they say that the graphic dimensions pixels are "density independent" e.g.

"One common pitfall you must avoid when designing your layouts is using absolute pixels to define distances or sizes. Defining layout dimensions with pixels is a problem because different screens have different pixel densities, so the same number of pixels may correspond to different physical sizes on different devices. Therefore, when specifying dimensions, always use either dp or sp units. A dp is a density-independent pixel that corresponds to the physical size of a pixel at 160 dpi."

Have a look at my scaling tutorial. You can find it on my channel!

Thanks! I'll do that :-)

thanks :-) I did read that article and it seemed to be totally about dimensions
so if my tablet screen is 1280 pixels wide and 800 pixels high (landscape) I guess I need to figure out how many actual dimensions in inches the screen is then do math to figure out how many pixels per inch (ppi) ??? does that seem right to you? thanks again for helping me figure this out, Megan

So I have been reading up on scaling and graphic dimensions for various devices but no where can I find a recommendation as to what dpi to make the images - I mean I can make a 1280 x 800 background for my android tablet game but what should the dpi of that 1280 x 800 background be??? 72? 96? 160? 300? or ? thanks, :-)  Megan

PS: I don't know if you have considered this, but you might turn your book into a course over at udemy.com - just a thought :-)

I wish you would publish it as a Kindle book - I would buy it but I don't see me getting into Macs any time soon - too expensive - take care, Megan

Well maybe you could have a non-public just for those who request it knowing its not the same pdf version with a paypal link ???  I am busy learning lots right now on my own but I do love to learn from others too - different people have different insights and ways of doing things etc. thanks for thinking about it, take care, Megan

I am hoping that some when down the line, you will consider making a non-interactive kindle version :-)
