Ask a Question / Re: Whats the way to do a tightrope walk type thing?
« on: June 05, 2014, 09:35:42 pm »
Thank you for your help,
I got your demo miner and have been learning a lot looking through how you put it together,
still having trouble figuring out how to generate the reactive tiles in more intricate shapes of the lava rather than creating one set of tiles all the way through the whole field of the scene.
Would you have any further advice for that element?

I'm doing a top-down dungeon crawler game and having a problem with this room.
The goal of this room is basicly just to make your way along the narrow path, if you go in the lava you get sent back to the start.

I have regions set along the edges of the pathways where if you cross over youre sent back (as above) and it kinda works but because the path has a few turns it takes quite a few region points to do it this way, so many that on testing the scene it causes the play to be laggy.
Is there a better way to get this mechanic to work that wont cause the lag ?

Hi everyone,
I have never done any king of programing before, but i did spend 4 years studying animation at college in ireland (where i live).
We learned both 2d and 3d animation aswell as lots about general design and story writing. Now i want my next step to be getting into game making.

The 2d stuff i did was all hand drawn and then shot with pencil testers, i am hoping some of the skills from that will transfer over to making good sprites for some games.

In 3d i am best with 3d studio max and zbrush, though i like to tinker with other programmes aswell.
Parts of my materials folder from max will probably wind up making the odd apperence in tiles for scenes but im getting ahead of myself as iv still got to get the basics of stencil down before i get sidetracked planning too far ahead.

A friend of mine recomended this software for me as he used it himself to make a game so i downloaded it just a few days ago.
Since then iv been through crash course 1 and im a decent chunk of the way into crash course 2 and finding it fun learning as i go and Im hoping to have 1 or 2 decent games of origional content done by the end of the summer but we shall see how it goes.

Would like to recomend the crash courses for anyone else starting out,
Good luck everyone   :)

Ask a Question / Re: Problem With 'Invaders' Tutorial

[ERR] java.io.FileNotFoundException: /Users/jeffreydriver/stencylworks/games/Invaders/resources/2.png (No such file or directory)

just a guess but have you double checked the file 2.png is where its supposed to be?
if it is deffinetly present you could try stripping out any associated metadata that may be complicating things when you compile

I'm on part 9 of the cash course 2 tutorial
http://www.stencyl.com/help/viewArticle/179/
According to the chat below some of the instructions are for an older version but as im new to this i dont know what to replace the outdated comand with.
could someone please look at the screenshot in the tutorial and tell me what i should put instead of the blue box "width of self"
i found the "x of self" box but there is no option for width in the dropdown
having tried every option in the dropdown (shown in pic attached) to no success i was hoping someone here could lend some advice.

new to  stencil so please forgive if an obvious answer is staring me in the face.
