Chit-Chat / Re: What do you use for animating?
« on: July 26, 2016, 07:20:28 pm »
I just started using Creature (http://creature.kestrelmoon.com/). The procedural motors alone are worth the price -- you can literally take a piece of static art and animate within minutes using pre-built bone rig templates, mesh deforms and procedural motors. You can export to a spritesheet, but they also have multiple runtimes including a Haxe runtime (https://github.com/kestrelm/Creature_Haxe).

Here is a link to the bone motors tutorial:

Thank you so much for all of your hard work on these amazing sound tracks. I'm starting up a new gamedev club and the kids are going to love these. If they publish any games I will send you the links and have them add you to the credits.

I know this is a very old thread, but I'm testing out game engines for a new gamedev club and remembered posting here a few years ago (2013).  Are there some recent examples of Stencyl being used in Education? Is Stencyl still actively maintained? I've been working primarily with Scratch, but think Stencyl is great next step after Scratch and my top choice at the moment. Thanks

Great suggestion! I just installed on a PC with 27" monitor and the Stencyl UI is very hard to read at a normal distance.

Teaching with Stencyl / Re: Discuss: Educator's Kit

Great work and thank you very much for publishing the guide!  I'm going to work on incorporating this into our coding club next semester.

One suggestion:
In Lesson1-TeachersGuide.pdf  (1-2) under Topic 4 it you mention: "Stencyl writes the code for you, so you don’t need to know how to code to create a game."  I've heard people say this before regarding programming in Scratch, but I think it undersells the power of the Scratch and Stencyl.  Block-based programming does obviate the need to type and reduces syntax errors, but the process of programming (coding) is still in place--breaking down a process into a logical set of logical instructions to accomplish a task.  Perhaps, saying something like: "Stencyl converts the blocks you use to actual computer code, so you don't need to type everything yourself.  You can even see and modify the actual code created by Stencyl." would still present the benefits without underselling Stencyl's power.

Resolved Questions / Re: Is Stencyl still in active development?

That is great news about the impending 3.2 release.  I'm a former Pro subscriber, but have been out of gamedev for a bit.  I remember using Stencyl a while back and think it's a great fit for the eager 5th graders in our club.

Resolved Questions / Is Stencyl still in active development?

I'm selecting a simple game engine for a coding club of students looking to move beyond Scratch (5th graders).   I really like Stencyl, but I can't find any information on the webpage about future plans.  The last mention in the version history is from May 2014 (http://www.stencyl.com/features/history/).  Is Stencyl still in active development?  It's really a great tool and I hope it is still active.  Thanks.

Hi! Thanks for the nice comments!  :D

I'm not sure when (if?) the book will be done. I'm not trying to rush it. I hit a major problem this week. I wasn't happy with the performance of Flash files in PDFs and the HTML5 files won't run locally. That's a major issue for building interactive files. I have an idea around this problem, but that idea definitely rules out Kickstarter.

Maybe just link to examples on GitHub or on your website.  You could also publish the entire book in HTML and host it behind a paywall on your own website.  An interactive book sounds great!

Very cool.  I loved the retro feel and the smooth animation.

Stencyl's been used to create non-gaming apps. Just a trickle so far, but there are a few made by Vectrex and some lesser known users.

gplar's released a ton of educational apps (40?), which you can view on his site.

Do you have a link to gplar's website?  I would love to see some examples of educational apps built in Stencyl.

I work in Higher Education, but have been working with a few parents at our children's elementary to implement some basic programming / game development courses into the courses using Scratch.  We're planning to expand into an after-school program for the older children to do actual game development using Stencyl.  Scratch is a great bridge into Stencyl.  Our goal is to align the program with the Math, Science and ELA standards.  We're looking forward to the curriculum guides you mentioned.  Thanks.

Best of luck and keep us posted.  Are you still planning on writing the developer guide?
