Aaand a month passes with no updates and very little progress. I hate having no time :<

Right now the framework for the iPad is pretty much there, making this a smexy universal app. Once the iPad side of things is shined up a little more (Graphically and performance wise), it's just the special level gimmicks (water, bouncy panels, new stuff etc) and level design to go. Hopefully it shouldn't be too long before you can try something out for yourself.

Old Bugs (1.x/2.x) / 1x iPad tilesets imported weirdly [b53]
« on: October 16, 2011, 03:06:34 am »

When I import a tileset into my game with a 64x64 tile size at 1x, each tile gets split into four. In the scene designer there are no gaps and it works as if I'd imported it at 32x32, but the tileset takes up four times as much atlas space as it should so I can't test to see how it looks in game.

When I try importing at 32x32 instead, each tile is split into 16 chunks in a similar way.

As a side note, the option to use the same tilesets and actors imported at 2x for retina at 1x for the iPad version would be extremely useful - I can see a lot of people who will want to use 1x versions of the same graphics for the iPad version, but the only way of doing so at the moment is by using multiple identical atlases.

Both retina and normal have the placement issue - The other bug with the text scaling being wrong in retina seems to have fixed itself.

I'll work around it for now, although Flash's positioning does seem to make more sense - the text centered on the buttons using the blocks as you would expect ([Height/width of button + Height/width of text] / 2) looks a lot more central in flash.

Absolutely positioning text works fine from what I can see - the placement differs only when the get height or get width blocks are used.

EDIT: Retina-izing the graphics is running smoothly...

I don't particularly want swiping in flash since it doesn't make much sense, but I suppose it could be helpful for windows users testing their iOS games in flash.

I just did some testing and you can see the difference here - flash's text position is in red and iOS is blue.

iOS text seems to be displaced 9 pixels to the left and 20 pixels down, but it might change with font size.

Aaand the menu's pretty much working and pretty, with new shiny retina buttons. You can also swipe up to get to the second page of the menu, so it can actually go beyond 9 levels now. Yay.

Next I'll get going shining everything else up for retina~

More bugs and issues and things:
The Swipe blocks don't seem to do anything in flash
Text that I've centered on the buttons is a little lower than it should be in the simulator - the "Get height for current font" block doesn't seem to be giving the right values.
The font on the buttons is at half size I turn the simulator up to retina - This one is weird, because the other two fonts are fine. I'll mess around with its properties and see if there's anything that's different.

Mmm, it looks like it ought to be set for me, and works perfectly in flash. I'll try adjusting the logic to avoid using the actor attribute at all in a bit.

Messaging can't be the reason, as the hit counter uses messaging and works perfectly. The patch in that thread doesn't seem to have helped with that issue, although now the arrow's lines' starts are also misplaced - looks like positioning also ignores the "Switch to Scene space" block now.

Jon: Emailing the game over now so you can take a look.

This is the logic I'm using for detecting when the ball is in the hole: I'm unsure if I'm doing it right, but it works fine on flash...

Player and Region are attributes.

For the second issue, I am using a "switch to scene space" block before drawing the lines, but by the looks of it it isn't working.

Let the port begin.

Levels are being remade to fit the smaller screen and not be too small and fiddly, and physics has been adjusted from the flash version to feel more realistically like Golf - the ball rolls properly now.

Features on the agenda:
Actually getting 18 holes done

If you want status updates slightly less interesting and more frequent than the ones in this thread, you can check my twitter. Or something.

The little web design that I've done was full of percentage widths to make sure it works nicely on any reasonably sized monitor. I find it irritating when a website is only using the middle third of the screen on big displays :/

My monitor's only 1280x800, though.

I live pretty close to a few places that were hit (Brixton, Croydon) but only one shop got smashed in my town. I saw gangs hanging round in alleyways and stuff in the day though, which I haven't seen before.

I'm glad I don't live above a shop or in a nice looking house, it would have been terrifying.

This actually looks like a pretty good way to get inspiration for new game ideas :P

Random health is a terrible idea. If I mess up, I don't want a random number generator to decide whether I get a game over. All civilians should be one hit kill.
