Thanks Merrak for your reply - with that I did some experiments and yes, it's as you say.

Ask a Question / How to make these amazing graphics
« on: November 07, 2022, 07:54:59 pm »
Please have a look at this game at

Are there any tutorials on how these graphics can be done in Stencyl ?
I imagine some of Luyren's packs would be needed?

Justin, you hit the nail on the head - I was totally blind to that !

This can easily happen when you are working very close to something and intensely so,
that you can't see the forest for the trees.

I really love Stencyl not only because both its concept and its looks are beautiful,
it is also because it makes you think hard - and at my age (73) that's what I need to keep my retired mind from rusting away.
Thanks so  very muchly.

Please see attached code.
This all works correctly, whereby I display the correct number of Aliens in the Group as well as number of Grabbers,
but these figures do not alter after I have started killing off Aliens.

So how to call the custom blocks only for Alive Aliens?

I tried calling on the condition they are Alive, and on condition they are on the screen, but doesn't work

I uninstalled Stencyl, downloaded and installed it again, and now the same game in a Windows compile works perfectly.

I had done this previously but it made no difference.

However, this time there is that little icon 'Game Controller' which I'm almost certain wasn't there before.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

This is already NOT enabled.

I just tried an HTML compile, and it half works.
i.e. the Aliens don't fade in and out BUT Luyren's particles spawn every few seconds just as they are programmed to do
(but that doesn't happen with a Windows compile).

This is very strange, and although I see it, I still find it difficult to believe!

I tried Luyren's suggestion to clean out the cache, but to no avail.

After the clean, I Immediately did a Windows compile which didn't change anything.
I then re-compiled with the Flash player and it works perfectly,
with the Aliens fading in and out, and Luyren's particles going off every few seconds as I  programmed it to do,
but the Windows (and Android) compiles run the game but without these 2 features at all.

Given no one else has this issue, it must be something local on my Windows 10 laptop.

I don't think I have a virus because I have Norton's running in the background and it has never let me down for last 10 years.

Thanks for your responses - really appreciated.

Thanks for your reply, but no, there are no error messages - compile goes straight thru to the end and builds the .exe

I modified the sample game 'Alien Approach' to have the Aliens fade in and out, and have Luyren's Particles behaviour emit particles from the Aliens - all works OK when compiled with Flash player.

But when compiled for Windows and Android, the game runs without any of those changes happening.
Any ideas please?

I really like Stencyl and after trying most other game engines, I want to focus on Stencyl and learn it well.
But this appears to be a show stopper for me.

Ask a Question / [SOLVED] Lyren's Utility Pack
« on: August 23, 2022, 03:19:08 am »
Bit of a mixed bag here.

I can find video tutorials to all Lyren's packs except the Utility pack - is there one somewhere?

The Utility pack comes with "a sample game, demonstrating some of its possibilities".
But when I try to run it, I get message "this game was written with a new version of Stencyl (4.1.0-b10658. We recommend upgrading Stencyl . . .". I'm using  version 4.0.4, and  the game starts but doesn't run
(by the way when is the next version to be released?)

On another note,  all the sites that give an over-view of Stencyl as an alternative engine to use,
say that it is a no code engine. Just my 2 cents worth here, but I believe  the Stencyl blocks are in fact a programming language,
but at a higher level that text-based languages. The blocks are pre-canned sets of code and as such are more powerful,
while freeing the programmer of thinking  about syntax and allowing more concentration on the game itself.

To me it's a wonderful concept, and aesthetically beautiful.

Ask a Question / Luyren Miscellaneous - Particles TAKE 2
« on: July 30, 2022, 10:02:16 pm »
Hope I'm not being a nuisance as this is the 2nd time I need to turn to the Forum for help on particles. I tried for 2-3 hours various parameter combinations to make my particles spin around the actor just like in Luyren's Miscellaneous Behaviors tutorial, but no luck.

Here is just one example I tried of many attempts, but obviously I'm not understanding something:-

Red Dot;Green Dot;Blue Dot,0,Self/0.2,1.5/1,5,0/Perimeter/10,50,0,360/Expand/10,10/3,3/0,90/0,0

It works, but the particles just go down and yes, the Gravity is definitely set to 'No' for all 3 particles.

Can someone please give me an example of the entire parameter line whereby the particles spin around the actor 360 degrees?

Hi Luyren,

Ah yes, I didn't realize I needed to do this.
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer and resolve.

By the way, you are doing a very significant and marvellous job in your contributions to Stencyl.

« on: July 28, 2022, 10:52:08 pm »
The sample game "Drop Block" freezes up when I attach Luyren's Miscellaneous Behaviors Partciles.
It starts off well, all three Red, Green and Blue dots emit from the Block the Particles behaviour is attached to.
But after about 15 seconds the emitting particles slow down then the whole game freezes and I need Task Manager to kill it.
Nothing else is moving in the game, I just click the block with the mouse and off they go, but not for long, whether compiled or by Flash.

The following is the setting I use:-
Red Dot;Green Dot;Blue Dot,0,Self/0.2,1.5/1,5,0/Random/0,5,3,10/To Angle/245,295/5,15/0,0/-10,10

What may I be doing wrong please?

Ask a Question / Fade In issue
« on: June 29, 2022, 08:27:22 pm »
I found the 'fade in' works if you set the 'using' parameter to either 'Strong Out' or 'Bounce Out' but it fades back in quickly regardless of how many seconds you specify - 'Normal Out' doesn't work at all.

I also discovered if you specify only one second duration, then you don't need the using parameter - but 2 seconds or more does need it. And with 'fade out' if you don't specify using 'Normal In' then the 'self' does not completely disappear.

Well, that's what happened with my experiments, but maybe I'm doing something wrong - please enlighten me if so.
