Chit-Chat / Re: Humans and Meat
« on: March 16, 2014, 04:22:00 am »
Another forum I'm a member of has rules against discussing certain topics, including religion, which I found a bit silly until I came back to this thread and read the last page just now.

I could add to the discussion, but honestly, it's going nowhere fast, and I think some of the rules from this other forum could have some value here, to help keep this community civil and friendly, with a few slight alterations of course.

From the General Rules
Quote
Before things get weird...
Some things are just inappropriate. Don't post them. Keep explicit content implicit, and to a minimum.

Don't be a hater.
C'mon now. Don't post defamatory, abusive, bullying, harassing, racist, hateful, or violent material. Refrain from ethnic slurs, religious intolerance, homophobia, and personal attacks when here. This is the kind of thing that should go without saying.

This ain't Blazing Saddles.
You do need stinkin' badges. If someone is being a jerk, report, don't respond, and wait for the cavalry to arrive.

Be excellent to each other.
The greatest of all golden rules.

Party on, dudes!
We're all here to play, talk, and enjoy ourselves, remember these guidelines and we can all have a good time.

And specifically from the "Worldly Talk" forum rules
Quote
Because they lead to nothing but trouble, and/or contravene the sensibilities of the staff, the following topics are disallowed:
Creationism vs Evolution
The treatment of socialism or any other "form of government" as a qualitative discrete state that equates to "evil"
Existence of God
Abortion
Global warming (discussions of political or other solutions to this issue are allowed, so long as they do not question the underlying science)
The concept of there being scientific controversy concerning the efficacy of vaccines
The concept that any branch or sub branch of science or mathematics is inherently suspect
That 9/11, the Boston bombing, any of the numerous mass shootings or anything similar were a "false flag" inside job perpetrated by some government
Any threads which fall into these territories will be closed. Posts may be edited, and users banned.

Out of curiosity; does being vegan mean that you can eat meat if you killed it in self defense then? Seems like it would be a waste if not.
Now that is a good point.

Another thing I'd like to add, just FYI, not all animals only kill for survival. Some animals have been known to kill for fun. I don't have references available atm, but I'm pretty sure I read or saw a doco about dolphins killing just for kicks.

You do realise there were bears in NA before there were people?
Why didn't they kill off all the prey back then?

Also we never SAVED domesticated animals, we CREATED them. They are not natural animals.
Also cats, hamsters and small dogs DO survive in the wild. Have you never heard of feral cats? They are not a natural part of the ecosystem, and should NOT be there.

This is not opinion, it is fact. Look up some of these animals you seem so worried about on Wikipedia, and you may actually learn something.

You'll get to choose whether it gets letterboxed, stretched or scaled up to fill the screen.
You may need to check out this page.

Nice game!

I did notice a few small issues though.
If I click the button to restart the level before the ad loads, the level begins, THEN the ad pops up.
This will obviously cause instant death, and possibly some bad reviews.
Maybe you could add a line that stops you from restarting until after the ad loads?

Also, as you can see in the attached screenshot, I'm not seeing the running animation, only a black square. This may be what MrPaul was referring to.

I'm running a Nexus S, which has a resolution of 800x480 as you can see by the size of the screenshot. Not sure if that might help you track down the cause of the black square.

It sounds like a line of code may be getting skipped after you lose a life for trying to place the piece on an already set piece.
It allows you to set the piece, but then you need to set that same piece again, it doesn't select a new piece for you. This causes a problem when you already have that corner set in all 4 sections.

It's fairly easy to recreate, you just need to play really badly!
As for finding the underlying cause of the issue, all I can say is good luck!

When you created your game, did you select 320x480, or 270x480?
Are you using Stencyl 3.0?

This thread may help you get your head around it, or it may just confuse you more.

I probably shouldn't even be posting here trying to help, since I haven't actually gotten to the point of making my own graphics yet...

Nice game dripple, I left a short review on the game page, but I did find a bug, and thought it best to post that here, rather than there.

When I tried to place a piece on an already placed corner piece, and lost a life, I tried to place the piece in the correct place, and it placed fine, but didn't remove the piece from my "hand" and since it was the fourth piece of the same corner, I couldn't do anything but try to place it again, which would lose me a life, or let time run out, again, losing me a life.

Not a very good description I guess, but I was too frustrated to get a screenshot.
I will try to recreate the bug and catch one if I can.

EDIT: Funnily enough, it's fairly easy to reproduce this bug. Will do some more testing to try and see if it only happens when it is the fourth piece of a particular type (corner, not colour).

EDIT 2: It seems to happen any time I break this rule:
- If you try to place the a corner piece on a already set corner piece, you loose a life (By the way, it should be an already set corner piece, and lose a life...)
When you put down the piece you broke the rule with, it duplicates. It ends up on the board, and also still in your hand.

If you need further info, let me know, I might be able to catch it on FRAPS or something for you. Or maybe just explain it a little better.

2- Humankind has contributed to other species in countless ways. Whenever there becomes a endangerment of a specie, we always try repopulation them and giving them care. We help beached whales a killer whales. We give domesticated animals lives nearly as good as our own. We set up reserves for endangered species and save threated animals. We have fixed eco systems and purified water. We drained disease  infested swamplands.

The proof of humanity's many blessings to other species is undeniable.
Please tell me you are trolling?

You do realise the reason why so many species are endangered is BECAUSE of humans, right?

Going back to what you say about Predators destroying all their prey, you might want to spend some time googling around, or looking on wikipedia.
When there is an abundance of prey, yes, the number of predators shoots up, since they are free to breed and raise more young, but when there is an overpopulation of predators, they don't kill off all of their prey, only most of them, which leads to a decrease in the number of predators due to starvation, which leads to an increase of prey, which brings us back to the beginning of the cycle.
This has been going on since before we "took over the world" back when we were actually part of this cycle, instead of the manufactured world we live in now.

As for "overpopulated filthy animals" if you're talking about animals like pigs, cows, chickens etc, do you realise these animals would never have existed if we didn't breed them?
Without human interference, there was balance. We caused all these problems you mentioned.
The environment and other species only need protection from us, and the damage we cause!

Also, chicken, cheese, and bacon (the holy trinity) are awesome.
That is all.

Seems like a pretty cool game. I'm not really a fan of games where you need to get things to the EXACT spot to end the levels, so I got frustrated pretty quickly with level 4, and gave up. I do have some feedback for you though.

The music sounds ok to begin with, but 30 seconds later you realise it's an endless loop of the same 3 sounds, so it gets the mute.
+1 for adding a mute button, but it would be nice to have the option of only muting the music, but leave the sound effects on.

I attached a screenshot of a "bug" I found. The barrel tipped over when it hit your little obstacle, and I was able to push it over to put it outside the useful area.
Standing on the left or right edge of the barrel allowed me to "ride" it in the way Nomosoft mentioned.
Not really gamebreaking, but it doesn't seem to work as intended.

Other than that, the store page looks great! Really nice screenshots, I love the graphics.

The link in the original post does not work. Here is the correct link.

Great work guys, you're doing a really good job of showing people what can be done using stencyl.

I had the same issue as Reashu, (he posted a comment on the game page.) I died just after the very first checkpoint, while the platform was moving, and the platform sound kept looping until I closed the window.

I agree that the direction change could be a little faster, but I don't think mouse controls are necessary.

Keep up the good work!
