BTW, I looked at the possible java alternatives and the only one I find was http://pixelitor.sourceforge.net/
it is also on github https://github.com/lbalazscs/Pixelitor and regurlaly updated

When I looked into this, I stumbled upon some old files, and realized that we had actually looked into Pixelitor 5 years ago. We didn't change since Pencyl still worked, but now that it's broken with the latest versions of Java, it's time to make the switch.
The default image editor is now Pixelitor. Made the change in nightly b10500, available in public v4.0.3.

After trying it out a little myself, I made one small change to Pixelitor to allow us to open new images in tabs instead of new windows if the application is already open.
