Title:  Pokepet Eevee
Genre:  Pet Sim Game
Fandom:  Pokemon
Rating:  E/Everyone

Premise
You have been given a newborn Eevee to take care of from your parents as a gift.  This Eevee is your first Pokemon, and you have to show you can take care of her all on your own, including feeding, cleaning, and playing with her.  You're given an allowance of P5000 every week.  You can buy any food or supplies you need to care for your Eevee at the market on Sundays.  Let's see how well you do in the next 5 weeks.  If you care for her well enough, she may even evolve!  Remember, keep her happy and healthy if you want to bond well with her.

Status (May 31 2011)
I'm going to use this thread not only to keep my notes organized, but also to ask for any help if I run into problems making the game.  I'm trying my best to build the game on my own, learn StencylWorks, and using any of the Help or Forge materials I can find on my own.  So if I ask here, it means I haven't found the answer anywhere else!  I appreciate any assistance =3 .

I've decided to go with spritework for the graphics.  I'm working on a 200x200 pixel screen, and will 2x the size for the final game.  I'm going with the super-simple style I've done in my mockups, probably, but for now I'm TRYING not to fuss over graphics yet.  Currently I'm familiarizing myself with Stencyl all over again, building up various Behaviors.  Most important Behaviors I need to figure out is a way to hook up a time/calender system and the various status bars.  Also need behaviors for pop-up requests, but that's the next over.  Done that, moving on to item system, dabbling more with graphics.  Not touching music at all until the very end.

TIME AND CALENDER

If an action is chosen, such as to feed Eevee or clean her, the time skips to the next hour.

Sundays are when you are given your allowance (P5000) and you can go to the market.  On Wednesdays, the VitaSalesman calls your house to sell you Vitamins.  On Fridays, one of two brothers visit the house to offer haircuts for your Pokemon.  The rest of the week is blank.

There are 12 Hours to Daytime and Nighttime, 24 Hours in a Day, 7 Days in a Week, 5 Weeks in the game.  Totals to 35 Days, 850 Hours.

EEVEE'S INDICATORS

Eevee's Status shows both her mood and her health.  Eevee can have 5 different 'moods', 'asleep', or 5 different ailments.

Moods are a linear range of positive to negative, with a neutral state between.  Eevee's Mood is affected by three (not shown on a HUD) status factors:  Hunger, Fun, and Cleanliness, which will be gone over further down.

Sleep is like the ultimate neutral state.  It won't be calculated at the end of the game, it doesn't effect happiness or sadness, etc..  It is purely resting time.

Ailments can all be inflicted through various environments while playing, but all have a 10% chance of being inflicted, normally.  Eating certain berries can lower that chance to 5%, 2.5%, or 1% for 24 hours.  However, you can also get Sick by being too dirty, and the dirtier you are, the higher the chance of getting Sick. To prevent that, clean your Eevee frequently.  Ailments can be cured with various medicines.

Pleased: ++ Mood
Happy:  + Mood
Okay:  = Mood
Sad: - Mood
Upset: - - Mood
Asleep:  Neutral sleep state
Paralyzed:  Ailment caught by playing during rain.
Burned:  Ailment caught by playing during sunny day.
Poisoned:  Ailment caught by playing during clear night.
Sick:  Ailment caught by being too dirty.
Frozen:  Ailment caught by playing during snow.

Eevee's Heart Bar shows how much she likes you.  The game starts with 3 hearts.  Getting down to 0 hearts will make your Eevee run away, which ends the game.  You need at least 5 hearts by the end of the game for her to evolve at all, and a max 10 hearts for her to evolve into Espeon or Umbreon.  There are many ways to get Eevee to like or dislike you.  They include:

+0.5  Happy for 6 hours (Sleep state uncounted)
+0.5 Give Simple Haircut.
+0.5 Give Lava Cookie/Old Gateau
+1.0 Pleased for 6 hours.
+1.0 Give Fancy Haircut.
+1.0 Give accessory item. (+3 Soothe Bell)
+1.0 Give Pokedoll. (+0.5 Weavile Doll, +2 Clefairy Doll)
+5.0 Give Rare Candy

-0.5 Give Herbal medicine.
-0.5 Wake up when tired (1-3 Energy)
-0.5 Interrupt Play.
-1.0 Sad for 6 hours.
-2.0 Upset for 6 hours.
-3.0 Ill for 6 hours.

Eevee's Energy Bar shows how much Energy she has to do things.  At 3 bars she will go to bed herself, and not wake until her Energy Bar is completely full.  You can get her to sleep earlier than 3 bars by tucking her into bed.  Eevee cannot sleep if she still has 6+ bars of Energy.  Every hour, her Energy goes 1 bar down (if awake) or up (if asleep) .  Ways to replenish Eevee's Energy without sleep include refreshing drinks like Soda Pop or Moomoo Milk, some Herbs, or some Berries.  You can only give her one energy-booster every 24 hours.  You can wake her when sleeping, but Eevee doesn't like being woken, and if still between 1-3 bars, will sleep again in an hour.  When afflicted with an ailment, Eevee's Energy will show to be 0 and cannot be altered until cured.  Energy does no effect Mood or Affection.

Eevee's Clean Status
This is a hidden status bar, and the player will have to see other indicators, like Eevee's Mood or if Eevee 'looks spotty' to realize what she needs.  Clean drops 1 point every 12 hours, even when sleeping.  Clean is maxed out every time Eevee is cleaned.  Cleaning only takes 1 hour and requires no items or money.  However, the less clean Eevee is, the higher the likelihood of Sickness.  Cleaning Eevee or giving her medicine are the only actions you can take when Eevee is Sick.  Eevee cannot be cured of Sickness until clean.

0:  [Faints]
1-2:  Eevee is Sick!  (100% Sick)
3-4:  Eevee looks filthy.  (50% Sick) Chance of getting Sick every 12 hours.
5-6:  Eevee looks dirty.  (20% Sick)
7-8:  Eevee looks spotty.  (10% Sick)
9-10:  Eevee looks clean!

Eevee's Hunger Status
This is a hidden status bar, and the player will have to see other indicators, like Eevee's Mood or if Eevee 'looks very hungry' to realize what she needs.  Hunger goes down 1 bar every 6 hours, even when sleeping.  Feeding 1 berry=1 hunger bar.  Eevee can only be fed once an hour, and only up to 3 berries.  If full, Eevee will not eat.  However, if at 8-9 and you feed her 3-2 berries, she will eat them all even though that goes beyond her hunger bar.  But these extra berries do not have a 'bonus effect' on her hunger status.

0:  [Faints]  Your parents take Eevee away from you.
1-2:  Eevee looks starving!
3-4:  Eevee looks very hungry.
5-6:  Eevee looks hungry.
7-8:  Eevee looks kind of hungry.
9-10:  Eevee looks full!

Eevee's Fun Status
This is a hidden status bar, and the player will have to see other indicators, like Eevee's Mood or if Eevee 'looks bored' to realize what she needs.  Fun drops 1 point every 6 hours, even when sleeping.  Fun is raised 1 point for every hour she plays.  Eevee will play either until her Fun level is maxed, her Energy is at 2, or if you tell her to stop. If at 8-9 when starting Play and her Energy is adequate, she will play for 3 hours by default even if her Fun caps at 2-1 hours.  Interrupting Play will make her dislike you (-0.5 Affection) .

0: [Runs Away]
1-2:  Eevee looks frustrated!
3-4:  Eevee looks irate.
5-6:  Eevee looks bored.
7-8:  Eevee looks satisfied.
9-10:  Eevee looks cheerful!

How to Check Hidden Stats
For all three hidden stats, in order to find out how she feels, click on the Eevee sprite itself for a popup.  Clicking her is basically the action of 'examining Eevee closer', and the status that is lowest will pop up.  For example, if Eevee is 'full' (Hunger) 'spotty (Clean) and 'frustrated' (Fun), the Fun 1-2 Fun prompt will show.  If more than one stat is at the exact same level, like 'dirty' (Clean) and 'bored' (Fun), the order of priority is Clean, then Hunger, then Fun, and only one prompt will still show.  If everything is maxed out to 9-10, a different prompt saying "Eevee looks absolutely perfect! <3 " will appear instead.  If everything is at 1-4, the prompt will be "Eevee looks absolutely awful... </3 " .

SHOPPING AND ITEMS

You get P5000 weekly, and can spend that at the market on Sundays.  Possibly also get PBonuses for doing well.  The VitaSaleman and Haircut Brothers visit your house on other days of the week, so keeping a little on hand if you're interested in their wares/services is a good idea.  Mom and Dad sometimes reward you with free items if you're doing well.

FEEDING AND BERRIES

Berries are what you will primarily feed your Eevee with.  The berries you get in a Berry Basket are completely random, and there are 10 types of Berries.  Berries can be Spicy, Sour, Dry, Bitter, or Sweet.  A diet of primarily one flavor can effect what Eevee will evolve into at the end of the game.  Berries' ailment-preventative effects last 24 hours after being consumed, and cannot be stacked (probably) .  I may have it so eating two of the same berry will stack the effect into 2.5% chance and 3x = 1% chance.

10% Cheri Berry - Reduce chance of Paralysis to 5% when playing inside.  +Spicy.
10% Chesto Berry - Causes Eevee to fall Asleep later (1E) .  +Dry.
10% Pecha Berry - Reduce chance of Poison to 5% when playing outside.  +Sweet.
10% Rawst Berry - Reduce chance of Burn to 5% when playing outside in sun.  +Bitter.
10% Aspear Berry - Reduce chance of Freeze to 5% when playing outside in snow.  +Sour.
15% Leppa Berry - Eevee's favorite.  +1 Fun.  -Dry.
15% Oran Berry - Gives 1 bar of Energy. -Sweet.
10% Persim Berry - Reduce chance of Sick to 5% when playing outside in rain.  -Bitter.
05% Lum Berry - Reduce chance of all status ailments to to 5% when playing. -Sour.
05% Sitrus Berry - Gives 2 bars of Energy.  -Spicy.

Other Digestables
Energy drinks like Soda Pop, Vitamins like Calcium, and Herbs and Medicines do not affect Eevee's Hunger.  Eevee can only digest one of each type of Vitamin, and 1 energy drink every 24 hours.  Herbs and medicines don't have the same restriction.  But, Lava Cookies and Old Gateau count as food and will fill your Eevee up completely.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

WEATHER AND PLAY

The weather outside can be sunny, rainy, or snowy.  Every day, there is a chance to 'Play', which is to Play for x hours (until either Eevee is tired, fun maxed, or you take her back inside) .  The weather can be Sunny/Clear, Rainy, or Snowy.  There is a chance for a new weather forecast to occur every day and night (12 hours).  These default chances can be changed by furnishing the house with a special Rock.  There is the Heat Rock for more Sunny weather, the Damp Rock for Rainy weather, and Icy Rock for Snowy weather.

Default Settings
70% Sunny
20% Rainy
10% Snowy

Heat Rock
90% Sunny
7% Rainy
3% Snowy

Damp Rock
25% Sunny
60% Rainy
15% Snowy

Icy Rock
30% Sunny
30% Rainy
40% Snowy

Eevee likes to Play, so play with her often.  If you don't, her mood will go down.  Playing with Eevee makes her like you more.  But, it's during playtime that she is most likely to get ill.  Eating healthful Berries like Cheri Berry or Lum Berry helps lower the chance of ailments, but keep stocked up on medicine to stay safe.  Eevee cannot play when ill.

Clear Weather (Night) - 10% Poison
Sunny Weather (Day) - 10% Burn
Rainy Weather - 10% Sick
Snowy Weather - 10% Freeze
Play Indoors - 10% Paralysis

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

EVOLUTION  (low priority)
Eevee can evolve into a Flareon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, or Glaceon.  There are different ways to achieve each evolution, and there are hidden bars for each evolution branch.  Maxing out an evolution branch will yield that evolution at the end of the game.  If no evolution bar is filled by the end, Eevee does not evolve.  An evolution bar needs 10 points to be maxed out.  Also, all evolutions need a certain amount of <3 Affection for you before evolving: either 5, 7, or 10.  Eevee needs to have had a healthy lifestyle to evolve.

There are many ways to raise an evolution bar, including:

+1 Give Pokedoll (one-time only)
+1 Give Accessory (one-time only)
+2/3 Give Vitamin (one-time only)
+1 Feed 20 X-Flavor Berries (Max 7)
+1 Play In X-Environment 20 Hours (Max 7)

ENDGAME

At the end of the game, you'll be shown how well you did.  The game will tell you:

1.  How much Eevee likes you, based on the Heart Bar.  10 possible outcomes.
2.  How happy you've raised Eevee to be, based on the ratio of Moods she's had (sleep doesn't count) .  5 possible outcomes.
3.  How healthy you've raised Eevee to be, based on how often she was sick and how long.  3 possible outcomes.
4.  If Eevee evolves, and into what evolution.  8 possible outcomes.
5.  Possible, and overall grade of how well you did.  Doesn't calculate evolution into grade, since evolution doesn't indicate how good a Pokeparent you are.  5 possible outcomes.

There are some ways to get 'bad ends' BEFORE the 5 weeks are up.  There is:

Run Away:  0 Fun OR 0 Affection OR Upset Mood 24 Hours
Faint:  0 Hunger OR 0 Clean OR Sick 24 hours

I don't think limited time in Tamagochi-type game is good idea. Instead it would be great if we can take care of Eevee indefinitely and the only game over condition would be her "fainted".

There are no impossible things. There is only lack of skills.

I think 14 hours for a flash game is good enough as long as there is plenty to do. I want to name my Eevee though >:O

Yeah, I'd considered making an 'endless' version, but wanted there to be some kind of goal to want to reach too.  I may make an alternate 'endless' version later if that seems feasible.

I want to name my Eevee too =O .  Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I can figure out how to make that happen, but I'll try!  (Or I'll end up asking other people and see if they can do it instead XD .)

I got started on some item icon graphics, made two more sloppy backgrounds and thus two more mockups.  I need to put a save button somewhere, and maybe an exit button or menu button or something...

I'm calling these placeholder graphics, but I'm spending far too much time with them when they should really just be nondescript squares of random colors.  Maybe I should call them 'rough draft graphics' instead, because it's more like... I do the first 2 steps in the spriting process, then I stop in the middle.  Or something.

Other news.  The first time I've attempted to use Stencyl for any length of time longer than five minutes on this computer, it has taught me that this computer hates Stencyl and Stencyl is disgustingly slow on it.  Not sure if upstairs computer will be any more receptive, may download on there and check to see later.

I like your idea. Though to do a name system, you'd have to create a blank scene and I'll see if I can find my text input system. (You'll have to disable Flixel Hotkeys).

almyki

Thanks =) .  I'm not sure what a Flixel Hotkeys is, but thank you very much for that offer XD .  I just made an attempt now to see if I could figure out how to do it, yup, I'm lost on that venture XD .

In other news, yay, I have created my VeRy FiRsT unique behavior all on my own, I'm so proud!  I went through the Design Mode Intro, and it was really, really helpful!  I totally 'get' booleans and attributes now, it 70% makes sense to be now BD .  It was just a behavior to switch scenes after clicking a button, but still, it feels like I did a lot.  XD

[/longroadahead]

It's official, my natural work-style is a haphazard anachronism stew that refuses to function in an orderly manner.  Sometimes I'm all on top of perfecting some stupid graphic, other times I'm 'screw the graphics!' make crappy placeholders, and then the other half of the time I'm scribbling notes or something...  Well, I made all the 'mood indicators' now, and yeah, the little face is muuuch littler now.  That text is so ugly though, I'm changing it later.  And right now I'm working on a Behavior for the moodlet indicator, I'm just going to try and make things from scratch until I run into trouble.

Thank you very much ^_^ .  I hope I can finish it before the end of the summer, I should have pleeenty of time for it =O .

In other news, I've decided to use this thread for general question-asking purposes and pleas for help relating to my game, and I will start now with this Behavior that is not being very nice to me.  It's not complicated, but it won't work at all.  The function I want is for, when the attached actor is clicked OR when the designated control/button is pressed, for the camera to move/slide over by [ 0 ] amount EXCEPT if the camera is already at the left/right edge of the screen.  I'm asking on Chat too, so this miiight be answered quickly and then I'll just edit this post to say it's resolved XD .

Out of curiosity, what is X Position and Y position attributes? Maybe reason for it not working is as simple as forgetting to set them on behavior config page and letting it be 0. I have similar issues too - tried to make strange thing to behavior and after some fiddling it turned out that I've forgot to set values in behavior config.

Oh, rightright I knew I should have explained that.

I used 3 Attributes on this Behavior.

'Direction' - Control Attrib - Choose control button to trigger Behavior.
X Position - Number Attrib - Add/negate [ 0 ] to X-coordinate.
Y Position - Number Attrib - Add/negate [ 0 ] to Y-coordinate.

I attached this Behavior to a left arrow and right arrow.  Right arrow X Position=100, Left arrow X Position=-100, and Y Position=0 for both.  I tried changing them to 20, 10, 5, 1, etc. and then they DID change the camera, but the increment size didn't seem to matter, and it only went in one direction, left.  It does stop at the edge of the screen.

I had that silly thought right now. Maybe you could after finishing PPE expand it to general-use tamagochi kit?

Ahahahaaa, that's a scary proposition.  I have no problems sharing anything I'd make and I'd love to see more games like this out on Stencyl, but I'm afraid that my lack of skills or work ethic would make it a little unlikely I could pull off something like that ^^' .  If I can make a true working game of this, I think I'll know more if I can manage a kit!  XD

I updated my post with more info.  As I've started working on different Behaviors, I've realized better how making things function work.  It's given me a better idea of how I should implement some game features, and I've got an even clearer view of how I want everything to function.  Oh, but because the size of it was making me cringe so much, I put them in... code tags.  I know they're not meant for that, and it makes it hard to read, but I'm pretty sure I'm the only one that reads it anyway XD .

I've been working on all the status Behaviors, like Hunger, Mood, etc., and I realized that most/all of these kind of rely on and effect each other, so I can only finish, 30%, 50%, 80% of a Behavior and leave gaps until I've made those other Behaviors to fill them.  The most important piece I need to fill now is my calender/time system, which almost everything else will be hooked up to in some way.  I'm wondering if the 'Time Count' Behavior (from Luyren was it?) could be modified for this, but I've only glanced at it so far.

This is basically my status blog or something now XD .  I think saying or typing thoughts out loud helps me organize them

Thanks =) .  I'm not sure what a Flixel Hotkeys is, but thank you very much for that offer XD .  I just made an attempt now to see if I could figure out how to do it, yup, I'm lost on that venture XD .
I just posted up Text Input on Forge. It's simple to set up. Just plug the behavior into your scene. (Don't bother with HotKeys, those are set already.) However, you'll need to use a custom behavior with messaging in order to get values and do stuff with them.
